Neither loli nor shota nor the idea of either appeal to me at all, but I too am puzzled by people's violent opposition to them. Much of fiction is full of all kinds of unacceptable fantasy. When the bad guys die at the end of a traditional hero story and you revel in their triumph, are you saying killing is okay? No, you're immersed in a story, and in the story the killing is portrayed as justified. That's a tame example... and it's tame on purpose, to show that stories and art about unacceptable things are completely common and an unremarkable thing in just about everyone's lives.

Except that every generation has its particular fears and terrors and things deemed unspeakable, the particular evils that completely take hold of us and horrify us all. And in our generation, one of our deepest horrors is to look around us and see the real exploitation of real children. That horror has seeped to the rock-bottom of our culture, such that even fantasy -- that realm where we usually accept that we can think about anything we want -- is tainted.

It's not logical, and as someone said above, I don't think you're going to convince anyone.

But for whatever it's worth, I'm with you. Inappropriate thoughts don't vanish because people stop thinking (or writing, or drawing) them.

And demonizing people for fantasy and refusing to draw distinctions isn't going to make the Jerry Sanduskys of the world vanish.

I like how no one's responded to the calm, rational, logical thoughts on this...

Honestly, I'm not really expecting them to. I posted some version of this argument on my LJ during that weird moral panic/"strikethrough" a while back, and a real-life best friend was terribly upset with me for holding this opinion and... I haven't heard much from her since. I don't know if the two things have to do with one another or not, but I think that's the level of upset some people are with the very idea of defending these types of fiction and art.

I just came back from being gone without internet for a few days, and after reading all of the comments, this one is the only logical/reasonable one here.

I understand that not everyone likes loli/shota; it's alright, it can't really be helped. However, calling people pedophiles and sick human being because they do is not the correct response to something that you don't like existing. I would also like to mention that I prefer to self-insert as the loli as opposed to the person having sex with the loli (don't ask why; I don't really know myself).

Seriously though, what happened to "your kink is not my kink"? I'm pretty sure people just conveniently love to forget that when faced with something that they don't like/agree with.

Lastly, as a fan of Touhou, I have to wonder if the people who are opposed to loli/shota are also opposed to Touhou as well? It has a huge fanbase in Japan and in other parts of the world, and one of the most known things about it are the loli doujins.

People usually subscribe to that until it's something that bothers them, unfortunately.
