Notes:

Important: I'm really sorry about this, but I accidentally clicked the wrong thing and deleted the submission post from last week instead of saving it. Managed to save the first page (25) of secrets, but the rest (a bit over 100) are gone.

If you submitted something last week (Aug 26-Sept 1), please resubmit it here and it will still go up this week.

The submissions post for next week is linked below as usual.

...Oh. I didn't even realize that until just now.

I mean, I'm sure if I'd thought about it I would have put two and two together, but like the OP I had no idea as a kid, and had never really reexamined that thought process.

Mind. Blown.

For a moment there I thought this secret was about how South Park made you think about the color of her vag.

Y'know, because of where the arrow is pointing.

(Gee, I'm so mature.)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-01 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I assumed this too and I wasn't even looking at the dress. Glad to see my mind is not alone in being so dirty.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-01 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought she was called Sexy Spice?

Originally, yeah, but the nicknames were made up by a British magazine, so when they were adapted for official use, Sexy was changed to Ginger to make it more appropriate for children.

Yeah, I thought it was just her name.

haha so did I. Whoops.

I wasn't really a fan of their music when I was younger though, and Ginger was the only one I remembered of the group, because all the other Spice Girls didn't make me think of, well, actual spices.
Even right now, I'm not entirely sure which one is Sporty or Posh :|a

Posh is Victoria Beckham.

Sporty is on the way left in that picture; Posh is on the way right. It's Sporty, Baby, Scary, Ginger, and Posh. I always got Posh and Ginger mixed up (I'm an American, and I'm not sure I knew what Posh meant when they came out).

If it weren't for my cousin liking them and the really cool dolls (where else were you going to get a black doll in the late nineties?), I wouldn't really remember them, either.

...Is this a British vs American colloquialism thing or something? Because what of course Ginger = Redhead. xD
oparu: (asoiaf winter is coming wolf)

[personal profile] oparu 2012-09-01 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it is. I'm an American living in the UK and I didn't hear 'ginger' at home to mean person, just spice. Here it means person more than spice and it took some getting used to.

I assumed the same thing when I was a kid. And I never really thought about it since, so it never occurred to me until now that yeah, she's called Ginger Spice because of her hair color. Even though I'm familiar with "ginger" being used to refer to red-haired people.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-01 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't know "ginger" could refer to people until just now (I live in the U.S. and haven't seen much South Park).

(Anonymous) 2012-09-02 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
LOL XD I didn't realize "ginger" referred to Geri being a redhead until I read in an article explaining the Spice Girls' Spice names in my teen magazine when they were first popular. I didn't even take into account as to why she was "Ginger Spice" before that!

(Anonymous) 2012-09-02 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
idk where you live but I don't think it's a widely-used term in the US
altumcor: (Default)

[personal profile] altumcor 2012-09-02 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my God. As a casual fan of the Spice Girls, I'm rather shocked. Not at the secret, but the responses.

I didn't realise that Ginger being used to describe red hair wasn't at all that commonplace in North America. Then again, it's not really here in Australia as well, but even I knew.

Still, what I don't understand is how Ginger (the spice food itself, that is) equates to red hair... it's more like a yellow-brown to me.

[personal profile] naturedichotomy 2012-09-02 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Me too, OP!

(Anonymous) 2012-09-02 10:53 am (UTC)(link)
Ha! I'd never heard the term ginger in reference to hair color until I started watching Doctor Who. :) It took me a bit to figure out what his "still not ginger" thing was about. I guess it would have dawned on me what "Ginger Spice" meant if they'd even crossed my mind after that point, but until this secret, that hadn't happened. So thank you OP. :D

(Anonymous) 2012-09-02 11:11 am (UTC)(link)
Wow then you were not a spice girls fan XD
the fans all knew (at least in my times) that the ginger stands for fierceness and sort of a firecracker spirit. I never thought in spice girls phase that the name was due to her hair because they had explained it many a times as well.
