(Anonymous) 2012-09-03 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)In certain faiths, they believe that every deity worshiped is just another face of God/the universal force/whatever. That this force reveals itself differently to each person and/or different cultures. The Baha'i faith believes that God is always sending down prophets/manifestations when they are needed. I've seen neopagans send prayers to gods from a variety of different cultures, even those outside of the pantheon they worship. So no, some theists believe in the possibility of other gods. You can follow the path of one religion or deity while still being open to the possibility that you are wrong.
And even if you believe in one faith, why is that suddenly a bad thing? Why does that automatically equate to "smugness?" The word "smugness" implies self-righteousness, which is a very juvenile way of looking at things. Are there those that fit your definition? Absolutely. But you can believe that you are right and someone else is wrong without feeling or acting like an insufferable prick. In the New Testament, a wise man once spoke words of not judging other people, and stated that judgment is reserved for God alone.
Obviously, no one knows for sure what will happen once we die. Some believe in a complete and utter cessation of existence, while others believe in reincarnation, or achieving peace with God in Heaven. All these things are believed without proof, but that is the very definition of faith. It all comes down to which belief system you subscribe to. And those who are humble enough to admit they don't know for sure, or can't prove it, yet still believe in God are more common than you know.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-05 12:51 am (UTC)(link)Atheist dude is right that professing Christians are evil....because they think atheists are evil, whereas actual Christianity says atheists are NOT evil...they are actually better than professing Christians, because they say, with honesty, if God were to present Himself face-to-face, they would believe. (Which is prophesied to happen. Google "the World to Come.") As long as they're not forcing their (perfectly sensible) beliefs onto other people, it's all gravy.
Other than that, there's this bit in a sermon given on a hilltop in Jerusalem by a certain Rabbi in Second Temple Palestine, long ago and far away, about loving your neighbour? Yeah, like that. And part of loving your neighbour is letting them exercise their free will. (Yeah I'm a Christian who believes free will is a gift from God. I realize that goes against professing Christian dogma. I'm fine with that.) Which both types of proselytizers DON'T do.
TL;DR: The atheists who want everyone to "convert" are just as bad as the Bible-beaters who don't even open the book and READ it, IME.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-05 11:03 am (UTC)(link)And yes, I do find it highly ironic (and funny) that those who loudly claim that the "other side" is full of aggressive people who keep preaching fail to recognize that their own side is the same.
Honestly, if all people just started acting polite, even when they disagree, a lot of problems can be solved. That's something I need to learn myself,m unfortunately.
