Notes:

Important: I'm really sorry about this, but I accidentally misclicked and deleted the submission post from last week instead of saving it. Managed to save the first page (25) of secrets, but the rest (about 100 or so) are gone.

If you submitted something last week (Aug 26-Sept 1), please resubmit it here.

The submissions post for next week is below as usual.

i love bill nye, but his spiel actually kind of disappointed me. mostly for a stupid reason though - i grew up thinking he was a super nice, great guy, but he was really vitriolic about creationism, and even as somebody who disagrees with it, it was a little disheartening to me in a way.

i agree with his beseeching parents to not hinder their kids' learning though, especially if the parents don't make it clear that beliefs are not objective truths.

eta: that's not to say bill nye isn't nice or great because of this, it just seems uncharacteristic and therefore unpleasantly surprising.

Honestly, the thing that ticked me off the most was when he called them all "f*ck*ng retarded," because my father, my brother, and I are all varying degrees of autistic, my brother worst of all, and hearing that word brings back a lot of painful schoolyard memories. And yeah, I was a bit offended, but he proves he's not a backwards-thinker with the rest of what he says (or at least not as much as the people he's arguing against, which makes me sad about the future of this country).

wow, if he actually used the word "retarded" though (I didn't hear/read the spiel) then in some way's he's less progressive than many people here are giving him credit for. That's disappointing. (I'm neutral on the spiel itself since I haven't heard it, and agree that creationism shouldn't be taught in schools, but disagree that parents should be prevented from teaching it)

He didn't say that. Watch the video before commenting. It's three minutes of your life. You can afford it.

There's a reason I used the word "if", anon. Also thanks for being really condescending and assholeish to me. You make me very much not want to watch the video (which btw I had no idea how long it was and I hadn't happen to have seen or even heard of it before this conversation happened, so bite me)

If you're referring to that image that was going around with a picture of Bill Nye and the text of a rant he supposedly had, it's fake. It was posted on a satirical website.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-04 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
He didn't say that in that video... did you watch it? I think you'll find it a very calm takedown of Creationism. And I think you're likely referencing that stupid macro that was going around.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-04 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Same anon. Sorry, I found the one where he called Akin that... sooo, yeah. Hrm. Not good. Apologies.

But it also wasn't part of the Creationist video which was my frame of reference.

yeah, i think he crossed a line. it was pretty offensive.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-04 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
You're a moron.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-04 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Actually I thought he was very even-handed in his takedown of Creationism. ... I've seen some scientists really fly off the handle in regards to Creationism, especially one prof whose topic of research (the bombardier beetle) is constantly being appropriated by those who believe in intelligent design.

All he did was say "don't teach your kids Creationism, you're doing them a grave disservice." If that's mean... then we can never say anything to anyone ever again.

i'm not speaking just in terms of his message on creationism, but lately he's said some fairly nasty things (like calling people retarded, which, contrary to what some people have argued above, was a thing he actually said). i do think he handled the creationism message itself rather well in comparison to other scientists, but i think there's still some room for improvement.

Cite your sources. Try not to refer to the satire site that put these words in his mouth in the first place.

the source i had actually retracted the story and i checked snopes who said it was a hoax so i was wrong, my bad. i'm glad he never went that far and i hope it stays that way.

You're a lying moron, and sorry to say, pondscum of the worst kind.

Within the homosexual element, there is a group called the “power bottomers.” The power bottomer is not just an expert at sodomy; he is singularly dedicated to this sexual assault and will entertain no other. Simply put, it is the only way he will achieve ejaculatory gratification. Recently, power bottoming has moved out of the shadows from a perverse psychological dilemma to a full-blown cultural trend with shamelessly vocal adherents. These types of sodomites delight in their lack of carnal dimensionality and spend much of their free time seeking out a mate who can balance their “queer” equation.
