Notes:

Important: I'm really sorry about this, but I accidentally misclicked and deleted the submission post from last week instead of saving it. Managed to save the first page (25) of secrets, but the rest (about 100 or so) are gone.

If you submitted something last week (Aug 26-Sept 1), please resubmit it here.

The submissions post for next week is below as usual.

Secrets Left to Post: ?? pages, ??? secrets from Secret Submission Post #296.

Was there a time when fandom was not crazy? I'm curious now....

(Anonymous) 2012-09-05 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Wondering this too. I've heard thigh-slapping tales of ridiculously pissy fights conducted via fanzine.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-05 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
No. Only times when individuals didn't see the crazy, weren't exposed to it, or were so deep in it themselves that it didn't register.

Yea...I doubt it.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-05 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if I was just unaware of the crazy or if it didn't exist, but when I first got involved in fandom way back when it was a pretty chill place. It was also a lot smaller.

No, never. It has always been thus.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-05 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
No. There were batshit SJW crusaders, up to and including fake deaths and people getting banned from cons, in the 1930s (and if you post about it, there are people who have still google alerts on those fannish names and will still try to wank about it.)

19th century Dickens fandom was even crazier, from what I understand, and then you get the people who were into multi-volume novels in the 18th century...

No, but there was a time when the dangerous crazies (stalkers, deliberate shit-stirrers, etc.) were criticized by the majority and *maybe* made to question their actions instead of getting virtual pats on the back and encouraged to keep on keeping on.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I *think* the secret sender might be referring to how it's crazy. It seems like fandom's more meta these days - you have anonymous memes, you have youtube musicals, stuff like that. When I was in fandoms back in the day, there were shipwars and crazy meetups where people would dress up and stuff, but it was still restricted to certain circles, and the "real world" barely noticed. Now it's almost cool to like some of the new fandom stuff, and just anyone can join in, which makes the crazy a bit crazier.

I hope this makes sense...? (Sorry for the anon btw, I forget my DW password.)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-05 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Crazy how? I don't think it's any different then before, just larger and easier to access. Before you had to know the secret nerd passwords to be a part of fandom, now we just have the internet so it's easy to be a lazy nerd.

Internet brings out the crazy in everyone! I'm sure you could meet with the fandom crazies of today and just have a nice coffee in the evening while discussing your astral plane relationships.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-05 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's that fandom has suddenly gotten crazier as much as it is more people than ever have access to fandom [thanks to the internets], and so odds are there are going to be more kooks, trolls, stans, or what have you.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
It isn't any less wanky but it's easier to find wank now.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's anymore crazy now, I just think it's a different kind of crazy than what we oldsters came up with, so it's got that added layer of unfamiliarity throwing us off. Like, man, I'm still trying to figure out Tumblr, and it turns out whole shitstorms happen and are resolved between when I leave in the morning to go to class and come back to check it again. MYSTIFYING. Hey, it's kind of analogous to the 24 hour newscycle that way, and I'm just an old person still stuck tuning into the nightly news.

But anyway yeah, I'm starting to feel like an old person, brimming with "In my day..." sentiments and being dubious of anything new. *shakes fist*

Fandom isn't crazier, but it has gotten faster. Thanks to smartphones, people get caught up in the crazy and then carry it around with them all day.

If the CLAMP fandom had had trumblr 10 years ago, the crazy would have been beyond belief.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Fandom isn't crazier, but it has gotten faster.

That makes a lot of sense.

..."and then carry it around with them all day."

oh god. it sounds like a body odour that horrible convention people who never shower have. Eau de toilunatic.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I heard that when Arthur Conan Doyle killed off Sherlock Holmes, fans of the books went into mourning and wore black armbands. And then the author was under so much pressure from the fans that he brought Holmes back from the dead.
This was in Victorian England.

So fandom has always been crazy.

I'm 19 - that makes me "the baby" in many (if not most) of my fandoms, which are usually targeted to older audiences. I feel old, sometimes!
