Notes:

Important: I'm really sorry about this, but I accidentally misclicked and deleted the submission post from last week instead of saving it. Managed to save the first page (25) of secrets, but the rest (about 100 or so) are gone.

If you submitted something last week (Aug 26-Sept 1), please resubmit it here.

The submissions post for next week is below as usual.

Secrets Left to Post: ?? pages, ??? secrets from Secret Submission Post #296.

I thought that was the point. She was a princess, not used to fighting, but still did her best and courageously went to battle. If she had aced the whole thing in seconds flat, she would've been a Mary Sue. Tolkien knew better.

Exactly and maybe Ms Otto didn't get the time she actually needed with the Stunt people.

I kind of really agree with that.

yeah okay no SHIELDMAIDEN OF ROHAN here, pretty sure she's canonically capable of Great Feats of Strength & Valor. If the movie failed to convey that, adaptation problem. princess my eye.

YES ALL MY APPLAUSES

SHE WAS ALSO THE PERSON TO DEFEAT THE WITCH KING BOO YEAH

Thank goodness someone gets it. Eowyn is a major badass, and that didn't really come across in the movie as well as I'd hoped.

A princess not used to fighting? Er, no. If that were true, she'd have been slaughtered within the first five minutes of battle, because princesses who've never picked up a sword don't end up defeating the Witch-King. It's not being a Mary Sue for a woman to be a competent fighter if that's what the character's background is.

The scenario you're suggesting (i.e. inexperienced princess still somehow manages to defeat one of the major villains in the book/movie) is far more Mary Sue-ish.

Yes, Tolkien knew better. That's why he wrote her as a shield maiden, i.e. someone who knew how to handle a sword, not a princess who had no experience with fighting. If you're going to cite canon, maybe read it first?
