Notes:

Important: I'm really sorry about this, but I accidentally misclicked and deleted the submission post from last week instead of saving it. Managed to save the first page (25) of secrets, but the rest (about 100 or so) are gone.

If you submitted something last week (Aug 26-Sept 1), please resubmit it here.

The submissions post for next week is below as usual.

Hmm, I can see why you might think that. :|a I haven't seen the movies recently so I can't remember how they look or if I would feel the same way. Maybe she wasn't very confident with the stunt work?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-05 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
If you presented it in a "the choreography for her fighting scenes sucked" rather than "Eowyn sucks" I doubt anyone would see it as sexist.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-05 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
presented it as*

I thought that was the point. She was a princess, not used to fighting, but still did her best and courageously went to battle. If she had aced the whole thing in seconds flat, she would've been a Mary Sue. Tolkien knew better.

That's a criticism of the directing/choreography/whatever, not the character. I don't see why it would be seen as sexist.
elaminator: (Lord of the Rings: Eowyn)

[personal profile] elaminator 2012-09-05 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I don't see how this secret is sexist. So you had some issues with her scenes in the movie. *shrugs*

(Anonymous) 2012-09-05 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Eowyn! /fangirls

That is all I have to say here.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-05 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Whether it was poor choreography or not, I think it makes sense for Eowyn as a character. She wasn't trained from birth to be a fighter, she wasn't given the same opportunities as male warriors - she had to make herself a warrior from scratch. She is good, but because of the environment she lives in, she is not allowed to be as amazing as she could be.

You could just say something like you think Miranda Otto had trouble with those scenes.

I don't see how criticizing the fight choreography is sexist. Presumably you get that Eowyn isn't the one not landing the blows!

So? Uma Thurman's a terrible fencer in Kill Bill. Doesn't mean her character doesn't kick ass.

Sounds more like you were critizing the sword chorography rather than her character.

[personal profile] iggy 2012-09-06 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds like less a problem with her character and more a problem with the actress and the sword choreography? I think that it's fair enough to point that out as long as you make it clear that's the issue you have.

[personal profile] ariakas 2012-09-06 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Half-assing the choreography for actresses is a long-standing Hollywood tradition, though, anon. I don't think anyone would take offense. Hell, even with modern action scenes, a convincing heroine is the exception rather than the rule. For every awesome and believable Trinity we have an Alice (from the RE movies) limp-wristedly waving guns in the general direction of the extras. Choreographers/directors just seem not to give a shit when it comes to their female leads.

But, but, but ... none of the other characters were swinging their swords like they meant it either. And for good reason. Killing the extras is a bad idea.

At least Miranda Otto actually got involved in the swordfight training. Liv Tyler apparently did trained for 5 minutes, claimed her hand hurt and gave up.

i couldn't stand eowyn. i just thought her character was badly written. and yeah, it sucks, cause she could have been really awesome...but..ugh. just no.

The logical question, then, becomes: Were all the men convincing with their swordfighting in the movies?

See now, I think when you have expectations of a character you love, that's not unreasonable at all. You should have standards.

Yeah, everybody can't be the epic swordslinger, leaving moutains of dead in their wake, but a character who's supposed to be using a sword should plausibly be able to swing one. I wouldn't feel bad.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 08:48 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I thought she was pretty good considering she had no previous martial arts/combat training. Although she did have a dance background.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 10:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. I don't like her but for other reasons because I didn't even care to watch her swordfights after she came onto Aragorn after knowing he was bonded with someone else.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the different between the character and the actress. Miranda Otto is no fighter, she was imitating one, and if she failed, that's not a huge deal... she was still portraying a fighter. Not sexist to point that out.
