Notes:

Important: I'm really sorry about this, but I accidentally misclicked and deleted the submission post from last week instead of saving it. Managed to save the first page (25) of secrets, but the rest (about 100 or so) are gone.

If you submitted something last week (Aug 26-Sept 1), please resubmit it here.

The submissions post for next week is below as usual.

Secrets Left to Post: ?? pages, ??? secrets from Secret Submission Post #296.

See, this is completely different from my school experience. I was forced to discuss the "hidden meaning" in I Am a Rock, I Am an Island (yes, the Simon and Garfunkel song) and pretend that it was sooo deep and mysterious. I was 13 at the time.

Don't get me wrong; I love Simon and Garfunkel, and I like that song. But being forced to pretend that it was high art, incomprehensible to the unwashed masses, was infuriating.

Then, when I was 15/16, my English teacher had us pick songs we liked to do a poetry report on. One of my classmates had a song that mentioned pot, but my teacher had us talk about it and refused to let it get titillating. She will always have my respect for that.

Rap is poetry. However, it's also quite violent, crass, and profane at times, and I'm sure many teachers look down their noses at it because of that. Also, it could have been a policy of the department not to allow that, because of the possible controversy - not all teachers are as brave as my 10th grade English teacher.

+1

I had a teacher who made us analyze Simon and Garfunkel, too. And Dylan. And a couple of other '60s folksingers. Look I'm all for the "lyrics can be poetry" thing, and I actually like hippie music myself, but if you want to make a case for poetry maybe try something other than the stuff you liked in college? It's not as profound as you thought it was when you were smoking pot.

Well, it was mostly that my 7th grade teacher was a horrible teacher and was so ignorant that she didn't realize that, for our acrostic poem, a girl plagarized "L-O-V-E" by Nat King Cole. So glad she didn't teach for long at my middle school

That... that isn't even an acrostic poem! *weeps*

and yeah she reminds me of the english teacher who burned our summer essay assignments in the fireplace because she was sick of having to grade them (she didn't last long either.)

The...hidden meaning? Hidden?

Oh goodness, that is precious. I guess for a 13 year old, it's a good exercise. And I can see a lot of 13 year olds being all "this is so my pain!" But to make you treat it like something deep? That's fun.

Exactly. Then again, my teacher was not the brightest bulb in the shed. She made our parents pay for vocabulary books, and then at the end of the year, took them away from us, because "you'll sell them to younger kids." Oooookay, lady...I'm pretty sure I'd consider many other options for money than selling my ratty, messy vocab book. Did I mention my parents were furious when they heard about that?

I had a teach that put on Pu the Lime in the Coconut and told use to analyze it. He was joking of course but it was amusing none-the-less.

My English teacher my class analyze Beatles songs as if it was modern poetry that should have been put on a pedestal. I hated it.

you don't get to trash the Beatles if you can't even construct a sentence.
