Notes:

Important: I'm really sorry about this, but I accidentally misclicked and deleted the submission post from last week instead of saving it. Managed to save the first page (25) of secrets, but the rest (about 100 or so) are gone.

If you submitted something last week (Aug 26-Sept 1), please resubmit it here.

The submissions post for next week is below as usual.

Secrets Left to Post: ?? pages, ??? secrets from Secret Submission Post #296.

How often do you think someone's opinion is actually changed by any argument or debate on F!S? Just a general question for OP or any passersby.

I think people are influenced, yes, by what they read. You might claim not to be impressionable, but most people are swayed by the majority or by impassioned rhetoric in some way, even if they don't realise. Coming down hard on misogyny is far better than leaving it alone, for instance.

You really think most people who don't agree are influenced by passionate rhetoric to change their minds? I would put that number at rather less, truthfully. But I might be wrong, too - there's no real way to gauge.

Mine certainly was. When I first found fandom, I was a slut-shamer, homophobe and anti-choice. After many years and discussions my eyes were opened. Of course, it was before SJW became a thing, back when people actually took time to explain their views without passive aggressiveness and name-calling.

I know more about trans and gender identity than I used to thanks to the Internet and even FS; but I'm not sure it qualifies as the same kind of thing as what you did, as I never had an anti- stance on those things, I just was ignorant about them. But if you made those changes in thinking, well done - I am impressed by your efforts.

There was a time online, in smaller groups like Yahoo lists or the like, where at least I feel it was easier to civilly disagree and/or cause shifts in thinking. It's still not impossible I guess, but as more people move to shorter and shorter formats like Twitter and Tumblr, it seems like puns and jabs are the order of the day. And I'm not sure how many people's minds have ever been significantly changed by a slogan alone.
