Notes:

Important: I'm really sorry about this, but I accidentally misclicked and deleted the submission post from last week instead of saving it. Managed to save the first page (25) of secrets, but the rest (about 100 or so) are gone.

If you submitted something last week (Aug 26-Sept 1), please resubmit it here.

The submissions post for next week is below as usual.

Secrets Left to Post: ?? pages, ??? secrets from Secret Submission Post #296.

I agree. I don't mind occasionally calling troll but when practically all the comments are "Lol troll" I feel like maybe people shouldn't comment at all. I try to very rarely call troll.

If you start with "I think you might be a troll but..." and then state a serious opinion I think that's okay, because at least you're still keeping the conversation going.

Fandom often makes the mistake of calling troll too often because we're used to fandom being different from the outside world and we forget even those in fandom can hold controversial and/or ignorant opinions.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-05 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
More often it's not the disagreeing opinion but how it's phrased. People don't just cry troll for people respectuflly arguing an unpopular opinion, they cry troll for people coming in and very obviously trying to stir up a fight or cause wank.

I admit that some of these people might not be trolls but just people who don't express themselves via text very well.

This. Though as anon said, even then some might not be trolls, but we have no way of knowing.

Sometimes they put their opinion in a way that they don't want to discuss, but rather annoy... so instead of discussing said opinion people just point out that they're just fishing for (negative) attention.

Likewise sometimes secrets that are obviously trolls generate pretty interesting discussion in the comments, but it doesn't mean people don't realize the secret itself is a troll submission.

True, to an extent, but I have also seen people whose ideas aren't so bad, but it's how they word them that can get others to rile up. I learned this the hard way.

Still, agree with your viewpoint *unless the poster is a troll. If so, then ROLL OUT THE GIFS.

when poe's law happens in real life, lol

sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between a troll secret and a real one, anon. i think it's a 'glass half full' situation, myself: people just don't want to believe someone could be THAT ignorant so they call troll. certainly there ARE ignorant people out there, lots of them, but perhaps it's just more pleasant to think they're pulling our legs for the lolz when they're actually serious, because thinking about them being serious is very depressing.

just my 2 cents. =/

I knew someone once who said he chose to believe that no one on the internet was actually real.

People who are genuinely ignorant in the ways you described typically do not benefit from education via anonymous Internet nobodies.

Calling troll is way to shut down and avoid discussion on topics we've discussed and discussed and discussed countless times before. The type of topics that don't have a resolution and may result in hurt feelings. We know people have stupid opinions, opinions that we don't agree with or opinions that are problematic. Calling troll is a way to tell someone we think they are a moron, without expending the energy on why.

In regards to calling troll on this comm: How many times do we have to see a secret questioning why blackface cosplay is wrong or why loli/shota art is problematic? How many SanSan shipping secrets or Darth Vader/Ramsay Bolton secrets are enough? If you missed the conversation the first few times, then too bad.

There's a point where the ignorance of certain issues or trends on the comm become laughable and ridiculous. That's when we call troll. So you really ship SanSan, oh well. Should've got in before the trolls started spamming the comm. So you really don't get what's so bad about blackface? Let Google be your guide; we're tired.

And, sometimes it's not what you say, but how you say it. The words you use, your phrasing, etc. Present your thoughts the wrong way and your serious query can come off flippant and disingenuous. Avoiding misunderstandings over the Internet is something you learn through practice. And no one will ever be perfect.

What do you have against Ramsay and Vader's epic love? That pairing is OMG SO CANON!!1!

Calling troll is way to shut down and avoid discussion on topics

That's exactly why it sucks though. This community is for discussion, the only one who should shut down discussions is techno.

And more often than not I have the feeling people call troll to be on the safe side because they don't want the "embarassment" of falling for troll (the horror!).

tldr

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Getting accused of being a troll I kind of expect since I'm anon all the time. Especially if it's sarcasm without an emoticon of some kind...or it is something I genuinely think or feel that happens to be a less common view. I expect an icon or a name would decrease that, but I'm not too fussed. So far I've only been called a troll when I'm not trolling about...8 or 9 times?
(But then there are times I commented and braced myself for accusations of troll before being pleasantly surprised. Maybe it depends on the general mood of the day)

I personally get really annoyed if I'm accused of being the OP of a secret just because I happen to agree with some of it (obviously if it happens to be an unpopular opinion. i.e. My frustration at my TV being filled with American shows)

But how many secrets have we had by people claiming they submit tons of secrets just to troll/stir the pot? How are you sure these people are "genuinely racist/homophobic/etc." and not trolls, and why should we give them the benefit of the doubt when it's clear we're wasting our time either way?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Educate people? LOL. Surely you must know by now that it's not the job of anyone who knows things to explain said things to those who don't know. The proper thing is to tell those who don't know that they are stupid and offensive, insult them to the point of absurdity, refuse to tell them why (or say something along the lines of "you should know why"), and then hope that they decide to consult Google. If they don't, though, then that's okay, because nothing will ever change as far as racism and sexism goes and it's naive and stupid to think that it will.

i agree, especially because i'm always accused of trolling. i guess it's because i'm very conservative and most of fandom is really liberal? i don't know. it is annoying, though, because nobody will engage with me.

Sometimes those people *are* trolling. Sometimes it's hard to tell (the mark of either a really good troll, or a REALLY irritating person). I definitely see where you're coming from, even if my reasoning might be a little different (or more specific) for agreeing with you: if we call "troll" at everything, without really stopping to consider, we start to dilute the word "troll". Which will probably happen because it happens with so many once-strong words on the Internet.

People spend too long in little bubbles

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 11:28 am (UTC)(link)
Where everyone agrees with them, or pretends to agree with them for fear of being dogpiled. Then, when they see someone express a different opinion, even if it is widely known that the opinion is the majority view held in a given society, they assume it must be someone either trolling or stupid/evil, because there's no need to assume people who aren't exactly like you might actually have reasons and facts, right?

+1

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I generally assume someone is a troll because of how they make their opinion known, not what it is. And from what I've seen, the vast majority of people are the same?

As in, if someone says something that I think is wrong, and I make my point, they make theirs, etc., that's just discussion. I can still think they're wrong without thinking they're just doing it to rile people up. Sometimes, especially when it's more personal opinions, things get heated, arguments happen. That's still not trolling. But if, in the course of the discussion, someone's point boils down to 'I am right because I'm right and you're wrong', and they're just repeating (often verbratim, usually with abuse of the copy/paste commands) the same thing, over and over? Then they're a troll.

And over time, people are more and more likely to assume someone's a troll when they've gone through the entire 'let's discuss this' game literally hundreds of times, and naybe three of those have made an actual difference. It's exhausting, and it's mostly not worth it.

I think shutting down an actual conversation with 'you're just a troll' is generally a bad idea, and if it's hit that point, it's probably best just to walk away and let someone else take it up. But then, if it's hit that point, it's probably one of those useless attempts anyway. Or just drop a link or two and leave it.

tldr: (which, yes, it is too long, sorry): there's a difference between being ignorant and discussing where you've gone wrong, and being an ignorant troll ignoring all attempts to explain to you where you've gone wrong.

Conversely, it also robs you of the opportunity to give serious consideration to their argument, and to contemplate the possibility that the current fandom concensus on an issue is not the only valid way of looking at it.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically, yeah. PLus it's just useless no matter if it really is a troll or not, because calling "TROLL" won't shut down any discussion, ever. It's just really the dumbest, most useless response possible.
