(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 09:11 am (UTC)(link)Personally, I don't think the absence of this is because new fans are being put off by criticism. I don't know of anybody who's reading BW without having read Watchmen first. I think it's more that BW, by filling in backstory, effectively shrinks the sandbox rather than enlarging it. So where the fandom used to have quite a lot of fic set pre-GN, and discussion about what made the characters who they were, that's now set-in-stone, and if you're not somebody who can handwave new canon, that's going to put a damper on your creativity.
(FWIW, personally, I'm loving Silk Spectre and Minutemen, though I do have issues with some of the others.)
