A "respectable job"

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
What the hell is a respectable job? I've had people tell me that they're going to school to get a respectable job but aren't most jobs respected (or should be respected atleast?)

Unless you're an assassin or some shit then..

People usually mean:; a job with good pay that doesn't require you to do things that are morally dubious.

Re: A "respectable job"

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
..But then again lawyers and are considered respectable..

not to mention dentists. I'm just being half serious though.

On the semi-serious side: I know some people who don't consider lawyers to be respectable.

As for dentists: well my godfather was one, so I'm biased.

What are you talking about? Dentistry is a respectable and hard-earned position!

Usually means a well paying business-y type.

Janitors, service industry, "blue collar" type jobs aren't seen as respectable to a certain demographic.

Re: A "respectable job"

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
NA

Which is ridiculous because with out people doing those types of job the world would fall apart.

Re: A "respectable job"

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous. I actually haven't seen the term used much recently since it's generally a classist term and people are trying to be all PC these days.

Agreed. Workers of the world unite.

YES. One of the janitors in the office building where I work is seriously the nicest person ever. And does a really good job, too.

Janitors, service industry, "blue collar" type jobs aren't seen as respectable to a certain demographic.

In my experience, that "certain demographic" is middle-class college students. No one else thinks that people go into the trades because they're stupid.

Re: A "respectable job"

(Anonymous) 2012-09-07 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
lol seriously. The same people who actually call a plumber and pay 80 bucks for a kitchen leak.

Re: A "respectable job"

(Anonymous) 2012-09-07 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I've mostly seen it in upper or upper-middle class people. People with money.

And it's not that they think people are stupid, it's more that they think they're lazy or not driven or not worthy. They seem to think that if anyone wanted it enough they'd make the effort and actually go to college and get a degree and a "respectable job", not realizing that people can't actually afford that shit.

Farmer/farm kid here. Fucking amen. You have no idea the amount of people who are just totally ignorant about how their food comes about.

See, this is my bias, but I actually find these jobs more respectable than more intangible, white collar jobs.

I'm a boring city adult-child that picks up uni classes for pure fun. There's so many interested trades/apprenticeships, it's hard for me right now to decide which one (or how many) I want to take. one of my favourite first world problems. But around campus, there's so much sneering about how so-and-so from wherever-the-fuck took up a bakery & pastry program, or went to the community college to become a teaching aide, or "actually chose, omg lol" to be a welder.
There's already the silly divide between science vs humanities (because who actually takes the latter or the arts? only profitable degrees are the real degrees!)

ughhh

(I have no idea how to get into working on a farm because I have no farmer kid friends, or know where to even begin getting experience for that :( I'm just going to be over here, being jelly of you)

A "respectable job" is a middle-class job; that is, a job that is acceptable and expected for the bourgeois, rather than one which is considered appropriate only for the proletariat.

A job that pays well and doesn't get your hands dirty. The less dirty, the better ( florists ane gardeners are the only few exceptions).

Re: A "respectable job"

A respectable job is something reasonably stable and well-paid that that allows you to make an independent living, and that is not usually held by teenagers/college students, or by unreliable people.

I can tell you what isn't a respected job: working for the US federal government. (Especially the IRS.) You want to get shit on by family, friends, peers and politicians? Be a federal worker. I never tell anyone I work for the IRS.

...Honestly, as long as you're making ends meet and not hurting anyone [without their consent], then I think it's respectable. But that's just me, society seems to have a whole laundry list of standards - including 'You can't do blue collar work and be 'respectable'' - at least, where I live. : /

Re: A "respectable job"

(Anonymous) 2012-09-07 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
white collar jobs are 'respectable' jobs.

Re: A "respectable job"

(Anonymous) 2012-09-07 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like there are some jobs, particularly in the service industry, that are considered transient positions that you take to support yourself while working up to something "better": retail work, delivering food, waitressing, etc. If you're still doing those things well into middle age, without plans to do something "else" with your life (whatever it is), it stops being respectable.

My opinion, though, is that in this economy you take the job you can get and are grateful for it, and you shouldn't judge what other people have to do to survive so long as it's not hurting anyone else.

Hell if I know. One of my friends told me I needed to go to a "real college" (the equivelant of a "respectable job", I guess) instead of a school for drama, and I wasn't sure how my major had suddenly become fake either.
