Important: I'm really sorry about this, but I accidentally misclicked and deleted the submission post from last week instead of saving it. Managed to save the first page (25) of secrets, but the rest (about 100 or so) are gone.

If you submitted something last week (Aug 26-Sept 1), please resubmit it here.

The submissions post for next week is below as usual.

Re: A "respectable job"

Usually means a well paying business-y type.

Janitors, service industry, "blue collar" type jobs aren't seen as respectable to a certain demographic.

NA

Which is ridiculous because with out people doing those types of job the world would fall apart.

Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous. I actually haven't seen the term used much recently since it's generally a classist term and people are trying to be all PC these days.

Agreed. Workers of the world unite.

YES. One of the janitors in the office building where I work is seriously the nicest person ever. And does a really good job, too.

In my experience, that "certain demographic" is middle-class college students. No one else thinks that people go into the trades because they're stupid.

lol seriously. The same people who actually call a plumber and pay 80 bucks for a kitchen leak.

Re: A "respectable job"

(Anonymous) 2012-09-07 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I've mostly seen it in upper or upper-middle class people. People with money.

And it's not that they think people are stupid, it's more that they think they're lazy or not driven or not worthy. They seem to think that if anyone wanted it enough they'd make the effort and actually go to college and get a degree and a "respectable job", not realizing that people can't actually afford that shit.

Plenty of people go into the trades because that's what they want to do. It's just as stupid to assume that everyone would go to a 4-year college if they could afford it as it is to assume that everyone would go to a 4-year college if they were smart enough.

You are oddly aggressive.

If that looks like an aggressive comment to you, you are oddly delicate.

Farmer/farm kid here. Fucking amen. You have no idea the amount of people who are just totally ignorant about how their food comes about.

See, this is my bias, but I actually find these jobs more respectable than more intangible, white collar jobs.

I'm a boring city adult-child that picks up uni classes for pure fun. There's so many interested trades/apprenticeships, it's hard for me right now to decide which one (or how many) I want to take. one of my favourite first world problems. But around campus, there's so much sneering about how so-and-so from wherever-the-fuck took up a bakery & pastry program, or went to the community college to become a teaching aide, or "actually chose, omg lol" to be a welder.
There's already the silly divide between science vs humanities (because who actually takes the latter or the arts? only profitable degrees are the real degrees!)

ughhh

(I have no idea how to get into working on a farm because I have no farmer kid friends, or know where to even begin getting experience for that :( I'm just going to be over here, being jelly of you)

Well, I'd curb your jealousy a wee bit :D

It's not the greatest of jobs with the greatest of conditions, and it tends to include long hours (10-17 or more) per day with little or no pay.

For someone in your position, I would suggest seeing if your school has any programs in animal sciences, and see if any of them offer anything like internships or work programs with farms. It may not be quite the same as actually getting a job in farming, which is mostly just heavy labor and care work.

Iowa person here, agreeing with you. But it's hilarious how many of those same people are now calling themselves locovores, grilling the grocer on where the food came from, and swooning over artisanal cheese...
