Things from childhood (or later) that you thought were great, but were actually really, really not

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to watch Dungeons & Dragons (the cartoon) way back. I always had fond memories of it, thought it was good and then I rewatched it a couple of years ago. I can’t tell if it was nostalgia, if I had built it up in my mind, or if it was just lack of judgment.

Star Trek novels. Star Wars novels. Sword of Shannara. Uhhhh plenty of other stuff but those are the big ones. Especially Star Trek novels - I mean, I have an enormous amount of nostalgic passion for them, but they weren't very good (at least the ones I read weren't).

I still think some of the Star Trek novels are good... I have a row of them on my shelf, left over from the days when I had at one point nearly every Star Trek TOS novel published.... but of course it's been a few years since I even read those ones so maybe I've change my mind again...

Tamagotchi's. At one point I had about six of them. Wish I was kidding about this.

I had at least three of them at one point and I thought they were just the best things ever.

Haha, oh man. You can totally tell when my Tamagotchi phase was - we have family vacation photos from when I was ten (1997), and I have my green Tamagotchi on its cord around my neck in every single one.

For some ungodly reason, I really liked the movie Dead Again when I was in high school. It has a good premise and while the twist is telegraphed, by itself it's not bad. But upon rewatching this thing last year... wow. Kenneth Branagh is a shit director and this is almost as bad as his LLL. It does have Derek Jacobi chewing the scenery, but Branagh and Thompson fail to deliver. As I said, the premise is interesting but the screenplay is pretty awful.

I'm pleased to report that Flight of Dragons is JUST AS AWESOME as I remembered it though. I don't know if it's quite as good if you didn't see it as a kid first (my brother-in-law didn't like it, but he doesn't go for animated fantasy that much to begin with), but for a weird amalgamation of two books it works surprisingly well. A very underrated Rankin/Bass feature.

AWW YEAH!

Aw, man. I love 'Dead Again.' I haven't seen it a while, but I remember it being super cheesy and awesome.

I used to watch the old Captain N and Mega Man cartoons and genuinely enjoy them. They make me cringe now.

I JUST watched Mega Man for the first time last week. Yeah, it was pretty lame, but I like most of the voice actors and I've seen worse animation.

The Bakshi version Lord of the Rings.

Shut up I was eleven and very unsophisticated >.> It's still better than Rankin & Bass' Return of the King, though, even if Sam does look like a potato.
ginainthekingsroad: 3 separate yet equally important groups- the police, the DA, and the goddamn Batman (Law & Order Gotham)

The Bakshi LOTR is great and nothing will convince me otherwise. John Hurt as Aragorn is just too perfect, even if he looks like he isn't wearing any trousers. The Rankin/Bass RotK never happened, la la la. *fingers in ears*

There's a cartoon version of The Nutcracker that stared Keifer Sutherland as the Nutcracker Prince. As a kid I thought it was AMAZING and it contributed to my love of classical music and dark fairytales, which continues to this day.

I found it at the library half a decade ago and rewatched it. It's HORRIBLE on every level. Cheap animation, bad script, lame voice acting...it's SO BAD. |D;

this book called The Riddles of Epsilon. I read it when I was about 11 and absolutely loved it. I opened it up about six years later and realised the writing really wasn't that great, and that the main character was obnoxious as hell and seriously whiny. It made me sad because it was a really cool book plotwise! I still want to re-read the whole thing despite all that, haha. I just really liked it. But it's not as great as I thought it was.

Oh man, Riddles of Epsilon! I probably read it at around the same age as you--I was really confused but thought it was awesome. It's on my list of books I'm afraid to look at again because I know they won't hold up to the nostalgia.

Rockadoodle, The Spice Girls Movie, most of the Olsen Twins movies. (Okay, they're not terrible. Just 'Meh')

Felix the Cat: The Movie. Dear Lord, I loved that movie as a kid. Now, when I see it, it's like watching some sort of weird acid trippy dream thing/ It's only bearable, sorta, if you on a sugar high, caffeine rush and have insomnia...It also helps it you are BORED OUTTA YOUR MIND.

Robin and Batman, (Okay, I still sorta like it, but in a way that it so bad that's it's amusing) The Two Casper movies, ANTZ, Inspector Gadget the Movie, the Digimon Movie, Pagemaster, Baby Geniuses, Pete's Dragon and the Power Rangers: Movie. (Hey, it was the height on my PR obsession.) Speaking of Power Rangers, I really like Power Rangers: Turbo....

God, there more that I probably don't remember. God, I like REALLY shitty movies as a kid. (I need to give my mom a hug for sitting through some of these)

I tried watching Clarissa Explains it All again a couple of months ago and the acting was so painful that I couldn't make it through an episode.

Batman TAS on the other hand was even better than I remember it, so there's that. So was Gargoyles

This is going to be a cool story sis, but eh. I've been told I had good taste as a child. Everything I've rewatched as an adult has held up so far.

It's the opposite for me. Things I used to hate as a kid I now have a new appreciation for.

The Pagemaster used to be my very favourite film. I watched it so many times that my family banned me from renting the video because they were sick to death of it. xD I haven't actually re-watched it but everything I hear suggests it kind of sucks. >_>

Goosebumps. This one has been agreed on with a lot of my friends who have tried to reread them as an adult and got super disappointed. The writing is meant for kids; what can I say.
