Important: I'm really sorry about this, but I accidentally misclicked and deleted the submission post from last week instead of saving it. Managed to save the first page (25) of secrets, but the rest (about 100 or so) are gone.
If you submitted something last week (Aug 26-Sept 1), please resubmit it here.
The submissions post for next week is below as usual.

Are you working ~in your field~?

Re: Are you working ~in your field~?
(Anonymous) 2012-09-07 01:46 am (UTC)(link)The way I look at it, of the many many many many many changes I've made in my life, both geographically and professionally, each move has been calculated to somehow better my lot in life (either personally, or professionally or both, even though it may not always look like that, to those looking in from the outside.
When I was younger, I was very much the black-and-white thinker of "This is what I will DOOOOOO with my life," but Life often disagrees with sentiments like that. (Men make plans, and God laughs, &c.)
Bottom line? As long as you're fairly happy (and even if you're not, try to think of it as a learning/character-building experience), it's really not the end of the world, if you don't end up achieving your ~one burning goal~ that you had when you started Uni. The world outside of the educational system just does not operate that way. Real Life is a lot more interesting that way!
Re: Are you working ~in your field~?
Frankly, I preferred Uni to Real Life.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-07 01:47 am (UTC)(link)I'm so sorry you're in that situation. :( I've definitely had periods like that, and it's an awful feeling. I hope an awesome job finds you soon.

I'm an English major myself, and for a year I went and taught chilluns in Korea. I would definitely say my English degree helped me there, ahaha.
On the other hand, I have some training in foreign languages, too. I minored in French and Arabic, the former with the idea to do some kind of service work. I'm still debating on applying to Army ROTC to help fund the grad degree I'm doing right now.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-07 01:55 am (UTC)(link)I work on quality assurance for a publisher that creates databases students use for research, so it's a lot of identifying website/design/data issues and helping to figure out what went wrong. Which sounds pretty boring, but it's like detective work. :)
Good luck with your grad degree! What are you doing it in?
Re: Are you working ~in your field~?
Political Communication. So far I am less than enchanted with it, mostly because there are very few political communication courses actually being offered atm.
Re: Are you working ~in your field~?
However, I'm currently also working a shitty part-time job to pay for that degree.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-07 12:55 am (UTC)(link)(But then, engineering degrees exist to get those jobs and those jobs exist just for engineering degrees. There aren't many disciplines of engineering that don't have specific jobs associated with them.)
Re: Are you working ~in your field~?
I think the fact that civil engineering as a major is so broad but then everyone specializes once they get out. I'm doing structural, I have friends in transportation, and more friends in environmental.
I absolutely love my job too!

Now I work with profile design on sportsocks and knitted hats. It's less backbreaking and I get to sit in a warm office.
