Notes:

Important: I'm really sorry about this, but I accidentally misclicked and deleted the submission post from last week instead of saving it. Managed to save the first page (25) of secrets, but the rest (about 100 or so) are gone.

If you submitted something last week (Aug 26-Sept 1), please resubmit it here.

The submissions post for next week is below as usual.

Secrets Left to Post: ?? pages, ??? secrets from Secret Submission Post #296.

Kinda-sorta. I've been told in the past 'you're a BNF!' but i don't think i am or ever was, and it didn't change how i did anything or seem to have any impact on the number of people following me, etc.

All the negative stuff you mention has never happened to me, so either i'm right and i've never been a BNF, or your experience with it is really different than my (supposed) experience.

Nobody ever *thinks* they're a BNF. :P I'm not one either (you have waaaay more readers than me), but every so often, the past few years, I get an influx of commenters who have decided I am for some reason and I have to kind of retreat into a shell until they get bored and stop paying attention to me again. I've seen it happen to other people at my level, too.

The dogpiling probably depends a lot on exactly where you are in fandom and what kind of stuff you do, though; some bits of fandom are saner than others, and some people are naturally better at not doing stuff that causes it.

Ah ha ha. I guess my 'experience' with BNF's was people who everybody talked about and whose every post was met with tons and tons of comments, no matter what. I guess i just never felt like that was *me*, you know?

...I get an influx of commenters who have decided I am for some reason and I have to kind of retreat into a shell until they get bored and stop paying attention to me again.

Okay, but...what does that mean? Do you mean you suddenly get a lot more comments on your posts/fic/whathaveyou? Or do you mean suddenly you have a ton of people going 'omg, you're so awesome/smart/funny/awesome, can i friend?!!!!'

I've had a handful of stories that were/are *very* popular and get rec'd a lot, but to me that doesn't make you a BNF, just a good writer. I guess i think of a BNF as someone who is more active in the 'politics' of fandom, or the opinions and such of fandom. I dunno.

I do know i've mostly avoided/been completely oblivious to a lot of the wank that's gone on in my main fandoms. Yay. :)

...I suddenly have a bunch of people going 'how dare a BNF do something like that' whenever I do anything more opinionated than post cat pictures. Or they'll whine about how my fic is overrated because of my status, or I don't reply to all my comments, on anon comms or whatever. Usually it happens for awhile after somebody with a lot more readers than me links something of mine, I guess people assume BNF-ness is transitive or something? And then I'll go in my shell for awhile, drop off the BNF-dar, do something way dumber, and nobody cares. *shrug* I get the good stuff too sometimes, the people PMing me because they're afraid to friend me or whatever, but somehow I don't mind that as much. :) (Except when it's someone I thought was a BNF when I was a newbie, that freaks me out a little.)

In my experience, except in a few very special cases, BNF is not something you are, it's something people do to you.

But I'm probably a lot more active in the politics side than you are, most of my really popular stuff has been meta, although I do generally stay as far as possible out of the personality fights. People who get known almost entirely for fic/art probably get less of that drama unless they're really unlucky.

......wow.

People really come to your journal to whine that your fic is overrated? What the....?

Yeah, that's just never happened to me, yay! I've had my 'time in the sun', so to speak, when i was posting a couple stories that got really popular, and that was a lot of fun, but mostly i just like being able to share the squee.

I hate personality fights. I detest wank. I really am here just for the pretty, the porn, the angst, the fluff. THIS IS NOT REAL LIFE. Real life is what i put on hold so i can hang out here.

I do love well-constructed meta, though i suppose people can pretty polarized about stuff.
