I feel for you, OP. I am a film/video editor, and 3D is becoming a huge, huge thing. 3D gives me debilitating migraines. If it moves to mainstream, I'll be screwed. Down with 3D!

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
In fact 2D versions of films are doing really well. In Britain it's the 2D screenings you have to book for, people don't like 3D. I hate it because it's too dark, 2D prints are much nicer to look at, plus it gives me migraines as well. I really don't enjoy the experience. It's putting sunglasses on to watch a film, how is that logical??

I think it will die out soon. The only reason it exists is to try and combat piracy.

I feel your pain, anon. I get motion sickness very easily now whenever I play anything. And I remember trying out a demo Nintendo 3DS at a store for about 5 minutes, thinking it was so awesome. About a minute after I walked away I got hit with a horrible headache and actually had to go sit down for a while. I used to love video games, but I just can't seem to play them anymore. :(

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
The 3DS does have an option to turn off 3D, which is what I use. Going against the point of the game being in 3D, but whatever saves my eyes.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-07 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Why do you have to turn in your card? Surely there are still lots of classics you could play? Maybe invest in an iOS or Android device if you don't already have one? There are a number of newish games on those that aren't 3D, even if a lot of them are probably more bite-sized than you'd prefer.

Not trying to be not sympathetic, but you don't have to give up games completely or anything....

(Anonymous) 2012-09-07 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
SA

Oh, and have you tried looking into various flash games? Kongregate and similar sites have lots of games you can try, most of which are 2D I believe.

This! Granted I don't really play games on my phone so I can't suggest anything, but I'm sure there's stuff out there that would be of interest to you. And plus, like anon said, you can keep playing the classics!

It does seriously suck that you're limited like that though. :/ IDK what I would do in that situation. *hugs*

(Anonymous) 2012-09-07 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, so frustrating. I have a hard time with most video games and some tv shows that are shot with a hand camera. I get so dizzy and nauseous.

[personal profile] quinnzel 2012-09-07 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I know you're probably looking for something more expansive, but indie developers still like to play with 2D a lot. Braid comes to mind...

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-09-07 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, this makes me sad. I really enjoy 2D games and was just saying I wish there were more new 2D games, but that's just an opinion not a health functionality based thing.

I guess you can still enjoy the older classics?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Are you and oflittlebrain the same person?

Have you ever played Braid?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I seriously find 3d overrated. I keep hoping it will fade back into the woodwork like it always has in the past. I mean it is proven that extended play/viewing can cause eye damage.

Though the only 3d games I deal with are on the 3ds which you can swap everything to 2d which I love. It seems like the option of doing one or the other is going to be a standard thing though, or else the game/movie industry would be screwing themselves out of a large demographic.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think OP means 3D as in 3D glasses, but games with polygons as opposed to sprite-based games?

Play some Rayman Origins! And Sword & Sworcery ♥

2D games aren't going away. Handhelds and PSN/Xbox Live Arcade, and PC seem to be where they're always headed, but they are there. And with all the indie bundles popping up all the time, there's always a slew of very-likely-probably 2D games you can pick up for super cheap.

I hate 3d, too - i get motion sickness in a heartbeat, 3d movies are a no-go for me, and most video games make me sick with all the camera swooping around and stuff.

Hey, you could always come join the handheld party with me! I mean, 3D games are becoming way more popular even there, but there's still tons of fantastically done 2D games for systems like the DS and 3DS (rather ironically, given the name.) Personally, I'd recommend things like The World Ends With You, Ghost Trick, Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime, VVVVVV, Elite Beat Agents, Bit.Trip, Cave Story, Sonic Rush, Monster Tale, the Phoenix Wright Series, the Professor Layton series, and 999: 9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors. I mean, it totally sucks that you can't play a lot of games. But if you dig into platforms you haven't used before, I think you'll find a lot of really interesting games from pretty much every genre you could want!

Oh! And if you've ever considered computer gaming, maybe try checking out Ib, The Last Scenario, Yume Nikki, or Cave Story? They're all 2D and all free to play online. download.

I remember getting Doom 64 for N64 years back and getting violently ill from playing it. I was so upset because I paid like $60 for it too & couldn't return it. I also didn't enjoy Mario 64 for some of the same reasons. That being said, I have found that there is a ton of fun to be had with XBLA releases on 360. I found plenty of new titles to enjoy on there that are in 2d or sprite based. Comic Jumper comes to mind, also HD remakes of some classics, like Earthworm Jim. There is also a 2d/3d game series called Deathspank that doesn't make me ill. It combies 2d & 3d into something that works for me & doesn't give me sickening migraines.

I don't hate 3D, but I do really like 2d games, or games that use both 2D and 3D. It'd be nice to see more big name games with graphics like the ones on Odin Sphere, sans the lag.

lots of 3D games where the camera is moved independently from the character make me motion sick too. oddly the 3D in the 3DS doesn't, for some reason.

but there are still lots of 2D games to play, especially on portables!

No need to turn in your card. There are lots of 2D games still being made.

Anon, I don't know where you're from and if you know it, but you could try playing "Terranigma" :) If you're from the US, you most probably won't know it, as it was only released in Japan and Europe, but there's a ROM of the UK release out there.

It's a really nice 2D game that was released in the mid 90s for the SNES. It has a wonderful story and fun gameplay, so that might also be something you could enjoy? <3

I'm really sorry, but don't give up! :( The world is still being filled with awesome 2d games, it's probably harder to find them, but they're there! Mostly they're handheld and flash games of course, but that doesn't mean they can't be just as good!

iOS in particular seems loaded with 2D games.
