SPOILERS BELOW THIS LINE, YOU'VE BEEN WARNED*****************************

OH MY GOD I KNOW RIGHT? I mean I've wanted to her to turn into a vampire since about the 3rd episode so I'm glad she is finally going to but that was so ridiculous.

Naming THE stupidest scene in a show of mega stupid is quite an accomplishment - How on earth were you able to chose?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Except that Elena has never been quiet about the fact that she wouldn't mind dying...

She's big on sacrificing herself in the place of her family/friends, but she's never been suicidal. And I get her wanting Stefan to take Matt, but once the car door is ripped off, there was nothing keeping her trapped there.

I'm no longer watching the show but I'm mightily curious. What happened in this scene and how is it related to Elena turning into a vampire?

Matt and Elena ended up driving off the Wickery Bridge (same bridge as the car accident that killed Elena's parents). Stefan arrives on the scene but Elena tells him to save Matt which he eventually does and thus she drowns (see my post below for why I don't think this is a major fail because there are reasons they didn't both get saved beyond because the plot said so).

However, it is revealed at the very end that Meredith (season 3 only character if you don't know who she is) had treated Elena for brain hemorrhages earlier in the episode and thus Elena have vampire blood in her system (specifically Damon's blood). And so Elena will be starting the next season in transition.

Thanks for the summary. That actually sounds like an interesting plot twist.

You're welcome. I personally think it was one of the most beautiful and moving scenes the show has ever done, as we kept going back and forth between the accident with Elena's parents and the one with Matt and got to see just how things went down.

It was pretty stupid, I agree, but not really on Elena's part. She's always been the person to sacrifice herself to save her friends so her asking Stefan to save Matt was very much in-character. And as far as her not being able to get out herself, I think part of it was panic, on her part but the belt was probably also stuck to a certain degree (Matt's truck is pretty old, after all.)

What was INCREDIBLY stupid was Stefan's bit. HE'S A FREAKING VAMPIRE WITH SUPER-STRENGTH AND SPEED. He could've: a) grabbed them both at the same time OR b) super-swam Matt to the surface and gone back for Elena in 2 seconds flat OR c) moved the whole damn car to the top of the lake to drain the water (okay, that one may've been a stretch because idk if his super-strength is THAT super but it's no dumber than what actually happened) Like...do his powers just cease to work under-water or something? We get that it was done to drive home the point (for the 9 millionth time) that Stefan lets Elena make her own choices but surely there was a better way to do it than this.

If they'd only had Jeremy or Bonnie be the one to go for the rescue, the scene would've worked fine, as they don't have vampire abilities. But for Stefan to not be able to save both HUMANS was absolutely ridiculous.

jeremy and bonnie would never have let elena make that choice to die tho--stefan is literally the only character on the show who is stupid enough to let the supposed "love of his life" die. sadly he also has super strength, so he ends up just looking incredibly dumb(er) than usual.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yes!!! It was completely ridiculous. Additionally, Damon would have saved her.

I read somewhere that given the amount of time she had been underwater, Elena probably wouldn't have been physical able to get out of the car by herself by this point.

Also, though we'll have to wait for the next season to answer this for certain, it is possible she knew she had vampire blood in her system.

And yes, I suppose Stefan might have been able to save them both but it's such a beautiful scene that I really don't give a damn about poking it apart. Haters going to hate but I think it's the best show on television atm.
