It was pretty stupid, I agree, but not really on Elena's part. She's always been the person to sacrifice herself to save her friends so her asking Stefan to save Matt was very much in-character. And as far as her not being able to get out herself, I think part of it was panic, on her part but the belt was probably also stuck to a certain degree (Matt's truck is pretty old, after all.)

What was INCREDIBLY stupid was Stefan's bit. HE'S A FREAKING VAMPIRE WITH SUPER-STRENGTH AND SPEED. He could've: a) grabbed them both at the same time OR b) super-swam Matt to the surface and gone back for Elena in 2 seconds flat OR c) moved the whole damn car to the top of the lake to drain the water (okay, that one may've been a stretch because idk if his super-strength is THAT super but it's no dumber than what actually happened) Like...do his powers just cease to work under-water or something? We get that it was done to drive home the point (for the 9 millionth time) that Stefan lets Elena make her own choices but surely there was a better way to do it than this.

If they'd only had Jeremy or Bonnie be the one to go for the rescue, the scene would've worked fine, as they don't have vampire abilities. But for Stefan to not be able to save both HUMANS was absolutely ridiculous.

jeremy and bonnie would never have let elena make that choice to die tho--stefan is literally the only character on the show who is stupid enough to let the supposed "love of his life" die. sadly he also has super strength, so he ends up just looking incredibly dumb(er) than usual.
