Pretty much all his behavior is not only emotionally abusive, but key warning signs to a domestic abuse situation. The one that sticks with me the most is how most of his decisions are claims of keeping her safe, but also removing all her friends. Those ideas are so harmful and coloring them as romantic is just dangerous.

I don't really get this from the books, though. There are numerous times when he's the one pushing her to spend time with her human friends/family and be human and spend less focusing on him; the only friend he tries to isolate her from is Jacob, because he's a werewolf (possibly you could also make an argument about jealousy issues, but Bella's so obviously into just him I'm not sure it washes). Not saying the books aren't problematic, but the "isolation" aspect comes waaaay more from Bella's side and her complete focus on how much better the vampires are than any of her mundane human friends who she doesn't give a shit about than anything Edward ever does.

Yes. He's pushing her into spending time with the human he deems acceptable that one time (he has no problem telling her who he doesn't like and dictating if she spends time with him, how it should be spent, to the point where he rips her engine out of her car to keep her from seeing a friend). He spends so much time with her that he watches her sleep without her permission (which is creepy within itself).

I'm not saying Bella isn't a seriously flawed character, but Edward Cullen pretty much checks every box for a domestic abuser and I'm kind of tired of everyone blaming her and hand waving him with "vampire". It's that kind of argument (even if this fictional) that makes it normal for people to blame abused women for being too stupid to leave. It's gross.

I think ayrt had a really legitimate point though in saying that Bella herself was the biggest driving force behind her isolation. I honestly can't think of a single person Edward tried to stop her from seeing who wasn't a werewolf. And again, while not condoning his behavior in those situations, I think he probably thought he knew better because he was 100+ years old and had experience with werewolves.

Maybe it's because it's fiction that I wasn't hit as hard by that as I am by portrayals of characters who obviously don't care about their partners at all.

And, now I think of it - it was obvious to me that Edward's behavior, in doing things like taking out her car engine, was Not Okay. But maybe that isn't so obvious to a lot of people, based on the way SM wrote his character. And yeah, that's a problem.

I agree.

he designates Mike as annoying and that he doesn't like him because of his attraction to Bella.

he also speaks to Tyler on the phone and basically says 'because of me, no one else will ever get to go out with Bella', without speaking to Bella about it beforehand.

Bella likes this about Edward because she likes Edward. That doesn't mean it's not overstepping his boundaries. He speaks to others on her behalf without finding out what she thinks before he does so. That is extremely controlling.

He finds Mike annoying and therefore he's isolating her? Wtf? That's shoddy logic. He might not have been fond of all her friends but he kept trying to convince her to lead a normal human life and hang out with her friends, getting his sister to throw her a party with her high school friends, etc.

Bella was the one isolating herself. She didn't want to see her human friends. She wanted to be a Cullen from the get go, screw her family and friends. Edward was definitely creepy as shit with a lot of the things he did but I think it's just making shit up to say he actively isolated her, when he went so far as to leave the country so that she might start hanging around normal people for once (that part was dumb, though).

I didn't say he actively isolates her. nowhere in my comment did i claim that. the fact is, however, that he frequently talks badly about mike and her other friends, and is unwilling to spend time with them himself, which puts her in the position of choosing him or her friends.

aside from that, he does actively isolate her when he speaks to tyler on the phone at the end of the first book. actual quote: "Bella is unavailable tonight ... to be perfectly honest, she'll be unavailable every night, as far as anyone besides myself is concerned."

so while i didn't personally say that he isolates her, and i'm not sure why you took my comment to mean that he did, you're wrong. he does isolate her. that's the quote i was referring to when i said he spoke to tyler on bella's behalf without discussing it with her beforehand.
