I honestly don't remember specific examples of him being abusive (other than ripping out her car engine...was it the engine?) but I'm pretty sure there was some solid evidence...

But didn't he destroy her car so she couldn't see one of her friends? That SCREAMS abuse to me.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-07 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Lets be honest, it's not that simple. Her friend happened to be a werewolf, and even in the book there was an example of a werewolf seriously maiming someone he loved. If I knew my sister was hanging around someone who could potentially murder her, I might go a bit overboard in order to protect her.

Well, he's no Christian Grey, but I think he can be quite emotionally abusive. I know some of it can be brushed off by saying he's a vampire, but he's still an asshole.

But at least Bella is just as bad herself. Those books are just about horrible people being horrible to each other.

To be fair, some of the 'abusive' things he does can be attributed to the fact that he is a supernatural being. (Vampire, in this case.)

But even so, it just goes to show that the relationship is even less healthy because his behavior is in his god damned nature and that relationships between humans and vampires are just plain disturbing and dangerous.

(Also a lot of the abuse he does is emotional and mental rather than physical. Just fyi OP.)

I really hope you are troll because that just sounds like victim blaming to me. It doesn't matter how passive the victim is in an abusive situation, it's still fucking abuse.

Not a troll.

I honestly didn't see any abuse when I read the Twilight books, just a boring messy plot. I thought this was why everyone hated them and because the film had bad actors.

I guess it's because I only recently realised that all of my relationships have been abusive, one physically as well as mentally. I thought this was just normal relationship stuff.

Pretty much all his behavior is not only emotionally abusive, but key warning signs to a domestic abuse situation. The one that sticks with me the most is how most of his decisions are claims of keeping her safe, but also removing all her friends. Those ideas are so harmful and coloring them as romantic is just dangerous.

i agree to a certain extent. he's certainly no more abusive or crazy than she is. i mean, the entire second book is about him leaving her because he believes he's bad for her. he only stays through the third book because he saw what happened when he left.

imo if you're going to say anything, it's that they're both way too obsessed with each other and exhibit unhealthy behaviors. but that's the point of the book...it's a fantasy romance; and it is, at least to me, romantic in the context of that fantasy world. it's not like any of that shit would ever be okay in real life. i think it's hilarious that people try to analyze it as if it were real.

It's like...it's like he exhibits all the classic warning behavior of an abuser--y'know, cutting her off from her friends, treating her like a kid, kinda controlling their sex life, bossing her around--except he doesn't actually escalate to hitting her or anything. If he were a real person I'd be saying "GURL GET OUT OF THERE NOW" because of the warning signs, but in the case of the books, that's not really the problem. He just does really weird stuff that's meant to seem romantic in context, but irl it has a much weirder connotation. I guess that's the point. Still a terrible relationship, but in a unique way. I still say if the tone was different and, like, owned the fact that their relationship is dark and obsessive and fucked up, I really wouldn't complain. But it's portrayed as nice and normal and totally healthy and appropriate for young girls to want, and that's just...not cool.

The Twilight of Lake Woebegotten

[personal profile] fadeinthewash 2012-09-08 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
I read this recently and might as well recommend it here, since it does an excellent job taking the piss out of Twilight while telling a (imo) genuinely more interesting and just plain better (more realistic, logical, etc) story. This is a love story about monsters... but the vampires aren't the monsters. It is also partially a parody of The Prairie Home Companion radio show, ftr, hence the title, location, certain characters, and so on.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 05:56 am (UTC)(link)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well...

I'm being emotionally abused.

Without the fandom mentioning Edward's abuse towards Bella I WOULD think this kind of thing is okay. I'd think that it's perfectly natural that your girlfriend should make it so that she intentionally has no friends, so that ALL of her social obligations fall on you. That you should likewise have no friends, and ALL of your social interactions should be with her. That all of their psychological issues should be cured by you (And not licensed professionals, as asking them to go to the doctor is 'foisting your problems off onto someone else')

And, though I don't know how to get OUT of an abusive relationship...I at least recognize that it is.

While I do think that Edward's behaviour is abusive, Bella's passivity has always disturbed me more.

I disliked Edward's behaviour extremely, but I wasn't surprised by it. Sad to say, by the horror stories I hear about the marriages from Edward's generation in my family, he's a downright Prince Charming in comparison. For another thing, the sparkly ones are territorial and treat humans either as food or pets. He isn't using sheer terror to keep her in line like Jasper does with his contacts, so he probably considers himself an A+ boyfriend.

But that doesn't make his behaviour okay. I kept waiting for Bella to call him out on his behaviour and force him to accept that she's her own person, he will either have to change or that's it. It never happened, of course. So while I could have loved them as a fucked-up couple, Bella just putting up with it and rationalizing it away was more disturbing to me than a vampire turning out to be... well, not a nice person. Honestly, I spent the first book convinced that he was hypnotizing her since any free will she possessed disappeared as soon as she looked into his eyes. Seriously, pay attention to it. She says no to something or argues with him, then she looks into his eyes and... nada. Edward is perfect.
