It's like...it's like he exhibits all the classic warning behavior of an abuser--y'know, cutting her off from her friends, treating her like a kid, kinda controlling their sex life, bossing her around--except he doesn't actually escalate to hitting her or anything. If he were a real person I'd be saying "GURL GET OUT OF THERE NOW" because of the warning signs, but in the case of the books, that's not really the problem. He just does really weird stuff that's meant to seem romantic in context, but irl it has a much weirder connotation. I guess that's the point. Still a terrible relationship, but in a unique way. I still say if the tone was different and, like, owned the fact that their relationship is dark and obsessive and fucked up, I really wouldn't complain. But it's portrayed as nice and normal and totally healthy and appropriate for young girls to want, and that's just...not cool.

kinda controlling their sex life

I can see the rest but really? Because he wouldn't have sex with her? What??????

It's called 'with holding' which, while a person does have the right to decide who they do, and do not have sex with and when...there's the counter point of 'both people's needs need to be met in a relationship' and he pretty much ignored her need [and desire] to explore sexuality before marriage. So, he qualifies as 'withholding' which is something abusers have been known to do.

Err... what? It's a sign of abuse if people have different morals about sex? If anyone was in the wrong in that situation, it was Bella; she started putting the moves on him after he repeatedly told her no.

He withheld the sex again after their first time because he was afraid to hurt her, even if she didn't mind. I'm not sure what the implications of that are, but that had nothing to do with "different morals about sex" so idk.

Ah, sorry, I forgot about that.

Because he practically broke the bed, and she ended up bruised. Just because she said she was okay with it doesn't mean he was. Not everyone is cool with hurting a partner during sex. Jesus christ, that's not abusive or "withholding". It would be withholding if he didn't give her sex until she did something else for him or something. Now THAT would be wrong.

treating her like a kid
Well, she is sort of a kid, especially compared to him. (And as bad as he is, he does have slightly more maturity than she does, despite all that blah blah-Bella-you're-so-middle-aged-inside nonsense.)

otoh-- let's not forget all the sort-of teasing, sort-of not about how much she's apparently fated to die in an act of clumsiness or malice and uhf, SO HARD FOR ME to keep CARING for you and keeping you alive omg. DISTRACT ME right now so I don't go kill some guys hrrrgrrr! If you get hurt/killed (by evil vampires), I'm holding you responsible!

He didn't cut her off from her friends, he was always trying to get her to hang out with her human friends. SHE'S the one who actively shut herself off from every human in her life.

He did treat her like a child, though. Very condescending.

Never controlled their sex life, as his values just differed from hers. She practically forced him into sex--how come no one sees that as wrong? But, nope... Edward is being abusive again, right?

I think their relationship was fucked up and Edward was creepy for several reasons and Bella needed some serious therapy, but I think people are really twisting the events of the story in order to make Edward look like this massively abusive monster and Bella the naive, innocent weak party. She was instigator in just about EVERYTHING with Edward, always pushing herself on him and attempting suicide when he left her--how is THAT not seen as abusive? They're both fucked up.
