The way I see it, if the terms "casual gamer" and "hardcore gamer" should keep existing, it should clarify fans who are into the medium, and fans who are just into particular games. Nothing wrong with either--but a "hardcore gamer" ought to be the type of person interested in the development of games, who follows games closely before release (and after!), and so on. A "casual gamer" plays games for fun on their own time.

Using movies comparitively, a film buff would be someone who takes the time to learn about film history, techniques, the studios, and doesn't just watch movies as a form of entertainment. I think someone who did that can enjoy a movie just as thoroughly and legitimately as a film buff, but obviously is not quite as "in" to movies.

But there isn't always a clear line between those two groups. Also, "hardcore" gamers are often derisive to "casual" ones. And sometimes vice-versa. I don't have a problem with the terms themselves, but I hate the connotations they have and they way people have used them. And why pick "hardcore" as a label anyway? The word kind of sounds to me like you're trying to point out that you do it the ~real~ way and is just kind of elitist.
