I built myself a badass 486 (that sounds like an oxymoron to some whippersnappers around here, I'm sure) with a proper Roland MT-32 synth so I could play my favorite childhood games the way they were meant to be played. In what universe is that a CASUAL thing to do?

Idk, maybe I'm just confused about the distinction of casual vs hardcore gamers. If your primary hobby was games and you played the Sims and lots of console and PC games, I guess I would consider you a hardcore gamer.

That said, plenty of people casually game PERIOD. It's not a gender thing and IDK why some people don't understand that.

Yeah, I don't get why people are so weird about "casual gamer" label. I don't really see why it's an insult. Gamer is a gamer is a gamer.

though seriously I can't keep a straight face when someone talks about casual/hardcore/srs gaming as an actual thing to be proud or upset over. Do you really need your credibility as a, uh, fan of games, to be validated by someone who buys into that?

This is probably because I identify as one. Yeah, I play a lot of games considered not for the "casual" crowed, such as Mass Effect, Final Fantasy, Zelda, but I'm not "hardcore". I'm a completionist and an achievement whore, but I'm not "hardcore". I will compete and enjoy competing with other people but I'm not "hardcore". Why? Because I define "casual" by how one approaches gaming and how much of their time they spend on gaming.
To me, "casual" is more about picking up and playing a game to have fun and just enjoy yourself. You don't spend all your time gaming. You have other things in your life you like to do too. "Hardcore", on the other hand, is about beating a game, about winning. It's also something that takes up much more time that what a "casual" would commit to.
Both are legitimate ways to approach games but I will never understand the hate that gets passed among the two crowds.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 12:21 am (UTC)(link)Using movies comparitively, a film buff would be someone who takes the time to learn about film history, techniques, the studios, and doesn't just watch movies as a form of entertainment. I think someone who did that can enjoy a movie just as thoroughly and legitimately as a film buff, but obviously is not quite as "in" to movies.

can we just ban "hardcore" from the gaming lexicon already
unless you're talking about the freaks at RPGcodex who won't play anything other than RPGS made between 1985 and 2000 because they like their games needlessly obtuse, so-called "hardcore" gamers don't exist.
i don't have a problem with baby's first RPG or whatever as a starting point for a new gamer. times have changed, gaming is more mainstream, and the bullshit hard games we played as a kid because developers knew we could only get like one game a year so they made them extra challenging so they'd last longer- which was also partially a side-effect of many of them being arcade ports- are a product of a different era.
but that doesn't mean that every fucking game ever has to be press A to win. that is my issue with some casuals. they don't care. it's something for them to do in between drinking pabst and discussing books they never read. why should the industry cater to people who don't even care? throw them a few shovelware wii games and let the rest of us who actually give a shit about the hobby have our actual games? they can't all be entry-level, otherwise what's the point of doing anything?
it's okay to not be a gamer. it's okay to play the sims, or WoW, or whatever. it's not okay to play those exclusively and claim you're a gamer, because you're not.

I don't know what they mean in any other circles, but when it comes to Magic: the Gathering, "casual" is someone who doesn't play competitively. Often that means "doesn't go to tournaments." But it means more than that, usually. Even among people who aren't in it to win some sort of prize, there are people who are in it to win and people who enjoy it for the social aspects, or like making fun decks. People who take it more easy, and like it that way.
I would say I am not a casual player (of M:tG) anyway, not in that sense. I do play in tournaments, for one. But for another, even when I'm not in tournaments, I enjoy the competition part of it. I sometimes enjoy relaxed games or formats too, but it's not my focus.
If I personally said "Bill is a casual player" I would not be saying he's a bad player, or an uninvested player. He might be better than me! I would also not be implying that he isn't awesome. Casual players have so much fun!
I would be saying his focus is on the pure enjoyment of the thing, where I like the challenge of improving and playing to win, even if it's sometimes stressful and unpleasant the way relaxing games that are about hanging out or enjoying other noncompetitive aspects usually aren't.

"Girl" games
And then there'll be a game from a place with a name like "Games for Girls". in which you bake cupcakes! or dress up for your hot date with the cute guy! or puppy simulations! tee hee!
I die a little more every time.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 02:52 am (UTC)(link)That said, meh. Personally I don't see what's so bad about being a casual gamer anyways [I'm not saying you *are* one, OP]. Really, what's so bad about it verses being a hardcore gamer? And I say this as someone who *is* a gamer by most standards.

I don't know though, I think we could stand to reclaim the "casual" title. It's not an insult. One of my fellow grad students plays nothing but the latest FIFA game and Football Manager. That's it. That's all he plays. He's a casual, and he'll freely admit it. There's nothing wrong with that.
