Re casual gamer and hardcore (or whatever) gamer:

I don't know what they mean in any other circles, but when it comes to Magic: the Gathering, "casual" is someone who doesn't play competitively. Often that means "doesn't go to tournaments." But it means more than that, usually. Even among people who aren't in it to win some sort of prize, there are people who are in it to win and people who enjoy it for the social aspects, or like making fun decks. People who take it more easy, and like it that way.

I would say I am not a casual player (of M:tG) anyway, not in that sense. I do play in tournaments, for one. But for another, even when I'm not in tournaments, I enjoy the competition part of it. I sometimes enjoy relaxed games or formats too, but it's not my focus.

If I personally said "Bill is a casual player" I would not be saying he's a bad player, or an uninvested player. He might be better than me! I would also not be implying that he isn't awesome. Casual players have so much fun!

I would be saying his focus is on the pure enjoyment of the thing, where I like the challenge of improving and playing to win, even if it's sometimes stressful and unpleasant the way relaxing games that are about hanging out or enjoying other noncompetitive aspects usually aren't.

haha careful about using "hardcore" and "casual" to describe card games, though. My biggest "game" of all is Yu-Gi-Oh! but I think a lot of video game players would think that the term "gamer" doesn't even apply to me. (Note: I play video games too, but not nearly as seriously as I play YGO. I play YGO competitively.) But when you talk about "games", I think of everything that could apply to - video games, puzzles, tabletop, RP/LARP, and yes, trading card games. Possibly because Gen Con, one of the biggest game-specific cons, includes all of those. And because a lot of people I know who enjoy things in one of those categories also enjoy things in others as well.

Also apparently a lot of MTG players are elitist towards YGO players? Not you though, I'd guess. lol
