I think the thing that most amuses me about the hardcore/casual thing is that people tend to lump RPG fans into the casual category, which just about makes me die of laughter every single time.

If it's casual to pour 175+ hours into a save file, repeat that on multiple playthroughs, and to know pretty much everything about a game there is to know then sure, tar me as a casual gamer. This idea that only shooty-shooty games are hardcore is ridiculous. Skill at aiming quickly and taking out enemies efficiently is no less of a skill than the ability to level to lv.99, to use strategy to beat optional bosses *cough* Yiazmat *cough*, or to explore a map to 100% completion.

That sort of comparison has always struck me as a strange one, because one thing is not like the other. Not only that, but it seems like a lot of the time a game gains the badge of hardcore because of difficulty level. If sticking with something with a punishing difficulty level where you're gonna be faced with thousands of game over screens makes you hardcore then hey, I'm tarred with the casual brush again XD
