You have every right to be mad. Gosh I hate fandom policing these days. Everything is triggering even if you have large neon signs on top saying WARNING: DON'T READ THIS! And you obviously had a set up for your scene so there should have been enough waring going in. I wished I was there to defend you OP. All I can say is please don't let the actions of one asshole ruin your participation and enjoyment of fandom. Stay away for a while, until the storm dies down, then go back and do your thing. You have every right to have your cathartic fandom experience as that so called BNF.

The trigger warning that really annoys me is character death. Not so much if it happens within the first chapter or so, but long gen fics that follow canons where characters have been known to die?

I recently read an older fic where one character had a terminal illness and it waffled back and forth between whether he'd find a cure or not before he finally died. And it had me invested in what would happen in a way that was so beautiful and would've totally be ruined if it'd said "WARNING: CHARACTER DEATH."

Not to mention that I like to write stories where characters kick the bucket and I'm always torn between warning for the people who want it and trying to be vague for readers who don't want to know everything going in.

I've seen people have the warnings section (and they did it the same way for *all* their fics, even those with no warnings) as spoiler-text - so those who worried about triggers could highlight to check, and those who wanted to be surprised could skip it.

And those who then whined about how they didn't REALIZE they were supposed to highlight the text with the big word WARNINGS: in front of it could sit on a self-referential cactus.
