What is this? Is it another straight nerdy white guy movie?

The Watch. So pretty much, yeah. I believe it tanked both boxoffice-wise and critically.

Ben Stiller's friend is horribly butchered, so he starts a neighborhood watch. The only people to actually show up are these guys and together they realize that the murderer was actually an alien, so they proceed to track the aliens down and destroy them. It's hilarious, if not very original.

White guy?

I direct your attention back to the photo you just looked at. How many guys do you see? What ethnicity is Richard Ayoade, if you had to guess? Now look him up.

Jeez, it's not like he's some nobody, and he's right there in the picture, and getting pretty high billing. Funny guy: done some excellent stuff.

Not that you should let facts get in the way of your righteous outrage: go ahead and erase him.

Different Anon here...

but to be fair, the colour of the secret makes EVERYONE look the same shade, and after IMDBing Richard Ayoade I have seen exactly nothing he's been in, so I honestly would have assumed 'four white guys' too just from a glance at that pic, maybe three white guys and one mixed if I looked at it more closely.

Looking at the picture, they all look to be very close shades of yellow. If you recognize Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, and Jonah Hill and know they're all pretty white regardless of the fact that they look yellow, you're not necessarily going to recognize Richard Ayoade (which, high billing or not, he's not a Hollywood actor) in that lovely shade as being of a different ethnicity.

So, you'd just make a statement about the ethnicities of people from that photo, if you felt it was hard to tell, and just assume people are white? I mean, I have to pay attention to notice race and ethnicity when there aren't additional cues, but I would look someone up before I made a statement about the whiteness of people.

It's kind of encumbent on you to look shit up before you start stirring.

Having said that, everyone who wasn't aware of Richard Ayoade is in for a treat. Look up some of the things he's been in. Try Garth Marenghi's Darkplace and The IT Crowd, and The Mighty Boosh (try a third season episode). How lovely for you that you have these things to watch for the first time. He is generally in the sort of thing that makes fandom-like jokes, as well as some very odd stuff.

What? If I saw three people I knew to be white and who typically star in movies with a majority white cast suddenly appearing yellow and the unknown person were also yellow, I might perceive that person as also white, yes. This has little to do with erasure and a lot to do with the unnatural skin color of everyone in that picture. Clearly, the person who said it had no idea what the movie was and, as such, didn't necessarily have the means to research Ayoade, who is, btw, Norwegian/Nigerian. I don't think he's going to freak the fuck out if someone calls him white.

If you want to go SJW on my ass, have at it but take five seconds to notice that it's not an unreasonable assumption.

Re: White guy?

Excuse me? The only one going SJW was the person who glanced at the picture and made a dismissive statement about them all being nerdy straight white guys. If I were going to make such a statement about people I didn't know, then I would fucking look them up to avoid making an ass of myself. There was no reason to make that comment without the information except to get reinforcing strokes of "yes, and you're such a good person for being disgusted by it". If anyone actually cared about such issues, they'd have looked more closely, or looked him up, or already have known who he fucking is because (even though he isn't white) he is not actually terribly obscure. You don't need to have watched someone's work to recognise them, at that level, because they're around in macros and gifs and memes and clips and avatars.

I do find it interesting that when someone is unashamedly a nerd taking part in nerd culture, they are read as white.

DA

How are you supposed to look up people you don't know? I don't know about you, but I am not gifted with the ability to look up people whose names I don't even know!

The only person in that pic I recognize is Ben Stiller and I don't even like 85% of the films he does, he's just everywhere, so it's hard for me to not know who he is.

I seriously feel like you're making this a bigger issue than it actually is.

I started seeing ads for it like a month after the Treyvon Martin murder and i thought it was just...really poor timing. Also - nothing that would make me want to watch it was evident in a single second of the trailer.
