Anyone else get this feeling the OP was trying to start wank by going HA HA !! I THINK YOU'RE WOMEN! And is failing badly?

Yes. Yes, I think she/he is.

Especially when you see the turn out to cons like Comic Con and men greatly out number women. Some fandoms are women heavy and some are men heavy. To say, "I think they are all women unless proven" has got to be troll.

It's not some fandoms over other fandoms, it's different definitions of "fandom." Using fandom to mean "fans of something," nearly all nerdy-stuff fandoms are overwhelmingly male, unless by fandom you specifically mean people who write fanfiction and draw fanart and similar stuff done on livejournal, tumblr, etc, in which case they are overwhelmingly female.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. Though it's as effective as shouting HA HA I THINK YOU'RE GAY UNLESS YOU CAN PROVE YOU AREN'T!

That's nice, OP. You're going to be wrong a lot but you don't seem to care, so... gl with that?

[personal profile] trollometer 2012-09-08 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Kind of. The tone is so blunt as to be interpreted as trollish, but the sentiment is one that I know many people share. OP may actually be sincere in their statement, but hoping to cause wank at the same time. We will see if their attempt fails. I think it has potential.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I think many people do the assume female part. Not the require 'proof' part.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that was just bad wording and by "proof" they mean the person actually says they're not female, not that they should send them pics or something.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmm, somehow I doubt that. When people say 'I want them to give me proof' they usually don't mean 'I want them to give me a statement and I'll take their word for it.'

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? I always interpreted 'I think A until proven otherwise' as a statement where while you have a default opinion A, strong evidence isn't required to change your mind, any "evidence" (such as saying, "I'm a guy") will do.
Then again, I'm ESL, so what do I know.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
'I think there is a God until proven otherwise.'
'I think there is no God until proven otherwise.'

Those people will never change their minds because somebody else informs them that there is/is not a God. Proof is almost always 'evidence' and more than simply somebody telling you something.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"Until proven otherwise" is a pretty common figure of speech, though, and doesn't typically require watertight evidence. If OP really wanted more "proof" than someone declaring their gender, I think they'd have made that more clear.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope.

[personal profile] naturedichotomy 2012-09-08 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think so~ I feel this way too. But... I think, in the parts of my fandom that I frequent, a lot of people have pretended to be guys, so I generally assume everyone's a girl unless they tell me otherwise.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2012-09-08 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
No. I'm a girl so I assume girl or computer (without a face, I can't prove you're not a computer either).

(Anonymous) 2012-09-09 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Er, no? Because depending on the fandom, experience + statistics will most definitely give you the impression that there are more women. Especially in the fanfiction/tumblr/lifejournal worlds.

On reddit, even when discussion fandoms, I assume most people are male. But on here I think almost everyone is female. It just depends where you are and in what fandom.
