It's an interesting dynamic, given how male centric a lot of the internet (or at least the internet I post on) is.

I was amused by the fact that just a couple days ago someone referred to me with the female pronoun despite how stereotypically 'masculine' my writing style is.

I do this too, but I don't require "proof" when someone says they're not. I just assume until corrected, because all the fandoms I've been a part of in the past were mostly female.

I don't mind this actually. When I join an RP group and they all know I'm male a lot of people are awkward. Them assuming I'm female makes everyone comfortable and really, my gender doesn't matter when we're pretending to be fictional characters anyway.

I've "met" way more women than men in online fandom, so I guess subconsciously I'm doing the same. My experiences in analogue life fandom are a bit different, though, as in exactly the opposite. :)

Nah, I don't think this one's a troll. That's kind of the unconscious assumption I work with too. Not EVERYwhere, but if there's fic being written, characters and/or relationships (not necessarily romantic ones) being squeed over, fanart being drawn, gifs being shared...I'm probably going to assume UserNameThisPerson is female until they say otherwise.

Or, I suppose, more accurate, when UserNameThisPerson says something that confirms they're female (or, at this point, gender neutral), I am unsurprised, but when they say something that implies they're male, I am surprised.

It's the vibe in online fandom, which may be a little silly, but I guess it makes for a nice change of always assume male is the default.

Movies/TV Shows fandoms - I assume female.

I gotta say I automatically assume this too. Mostly because most of my fandom circles ARE overwhelmingly made up of girls, so it just kind of...becomes the default from repeated experience?

I do this too, and I've discovered that after spending so many years dealing with primarily female fandom (both online and at cons because the only cons I ever went to-- many years ago-- were anime cons with higher female than male attendance) I get a little shell-shocked when I cross over into "mainstream" fandom spaces that are male-dominated. And, sadly, which are usually quite homophobic and misogynist.

Yeah me, too, only I don't demand proof. (I mean how would anyone even do that? Drop trou and take pics?) If someone says they are male, I believe they are male. Otherwise, I default to female.

I think that's how it is in most places. The only places where my assumptions are switched are places dedicated to video game talk (like GameFAQs) and 4chan. (Yeah, I count 4chan as fandom, whether they like it or not.)

I was under the impression most people assumed that everyone was like them until proven otherwise. I've read a lot of comments and people talking about how they assume everyone they talk to is their own age and gender until they are either proven otherwise.

Ditto. Though I try to tell myself that's because women are the target audience, the journal/username/userpics are feminine, the person is a slash fan, etc. It makes me feel like a horrible person, but it's pretty much always true.

I admittedly assume most users on LJ (and here too!) are female. But sometimes for registered users I'll look at the person's icon; if they have a default they use heavily with a male in it, I think of them as a man, and I do the same with female icons. If there are two or more people in the icon I have no idea what gender they are. IDK why I do this, it's so weird.

Forums and such? I find I assume a more equal ratio, though I'm not sure that's accurate.
