I was under the impression most people assumed that everyone was like them until proven otherwise. I've read a lot of comments and people talking about how they assume everyone they talk to is their own age and gender until they are either proven otherwise.

Interesting. I mostly assume anyone I'm talking to is a middle-aged, straight, married female with children, although I'm only one of those things. If the writing is terrible in a certain way, I assume they're not a native speaker or resident of my country; if it's terrible in a different way, the age range drops a few decades and the children and wedding ring go away. And that probably says a lot about my fandoms.

My assumptions are similar to yours. I have no general assumptions, it's mostly all based on writing style.

I assume that fandom is all bored college kids, probably because that's when I was most into fandom. I'm never surprised when someone turns out to be in high school, but always surprised when someone is my age or older.

yeah same. And when I end up in a fandom that seems to be predominately made up of people around my age I don't even know how to deal :p

I always assume people in fandom are older than me, but that's because I discovered lj when I was 12. Now I talk to someone and if they turn out to be in their teens I'm shocked. Just like I've been ever since I started clicking the "I'm over 18 years old" button without perjuring myself.
