Question! Why is it May-December? That always makes it sound, to me, like the older partner is on the verge of moving into a nursing home. Whether 'May' is meant specifcally as the 5th month of the year, ergo young-but-not-too-young, or as a stand-in for spring, December seems a bit harsh for all but the most extreme of pairings? How about May-October?

May-December has always just been seen as a "significant" age difference, although what that actually means varies from person to person. I think someone in their 20s with someone in their 50s/older when people mention it, though, with May-October being someone in their 20s to someone in their 40s.

I doubt this is the usual interpretation of this, though.

I swear I have seen May-September when it's 20s-40s or even 20s-50s.

The Beeb did a sitcom in the 80s called May to December about the romance between an older man/younger woman. The term's been around for ages :)

I certainly bristle at the labeling of people aged 35-40 being "December". The LAST month. You can't get older than December.

Not exactly. May just refers to the "spring" of someone's life, whereas December is the "winter" of it. Winter can also include Jan, Feb, and even March in some places, so I don't think December actually means on death's door.

*shrug* It's just an expression. While it can and does occasionally mean a very large age gap where the older partner is in the senior citizen+ stage, it's often used to indicate any relationship with a significant age gap. Nobody's saying that being 40 years old means one foot in the grave.
