I'm not following you. I don't personally ship them but only because I really like their consensually unequal friendship (he's her commander, she's his faithful second), and because I'm pretty much sated for un-fucked up het by canon shows and books. But I'm not squicked by them. I'm just kind of meh at the thought of their romance.

Unless you really dislike boss/underling because of the power dynamics inherent in that, I'm not really seeing what is squick worthy.

That's the only thing I can come up with. Maybe OP's hesitance to talk about it is because she has a personal experience that gave her (or him) that squick? I can't imagine why else it would be such a big deal.

Yeah, that's a real possibility -- but in that case, why worry about the pairing at all. It's not like in the FMA fandom it's required to love Royai -- in fact, when I was in it, that was the easiest ship to avoid, because all the Royai shippers took themselves off to their own communities. The main community was full of pretty much every ship but that one. Or so it was 4 years ago. It's possible it's changed since I moved on.

Yeah, no idea myself, I've never been active in FMA fandom. I've gotten the impression that Roy/Riza has become more popular in recent years (was it confirmed in the manga, or something? I haven't finished that yet), but that it's still more common to slash Roy with Hughes or Ed. (Which...would have the same power imbalance issues as Roy/Riza, wouldn't it?)

It wasn't confirmed. In fact it was pretty clear that they weren't "together" at the end. I think that's actually why it got the surge in popularity, people are putting in the happy ending they wanted but didn't get.

Aaaaah, I see. That makes sense. In one of my fandoms the most popular pairing is one where the guy is canonically in love with the girl but she doesn't seem to realize it and has a crush on another guy. There's a looooot of fanfic centered around those two and her finally accepting her feelings, etc.

Actually, Arakawa pretty much came right out and said that the only reason they weren't married already was because of military regulations. So they're together, just not married.

Sure, but point remains, they were shown at the end as comrades but not shown romantically.

Oh it totally would -- maybe not so much with Roy/Hughes, they aren't in the same chain of command, but Roy/Ed has all kinds of potential skeevy. You got an age difference, a power difference, and Roy has the dirt on Ed to boot. A lot of writers (including me) explored all the various fucked up ways that could go. And a lot of writers just ignored all the problems and wrote it as being cute and waffy.

No I wouldn't suggest Roy/Ed to someone who had a problem with chain of command. Personally I preferred Roy and Risa's relationship being depicted as gen, because that appealed to me more, not because I have any squick about the issue. But I can see how people might.

While they weren't officially together in canon, Arakawa said in an interview that the only reason they weren't married is because military regulations didn't allow them to be.

It's popping up much more now that the manga has ended. I keep seeing post-manga happy-Royai-plus-baby stuff in the general or Roy-centric areas I frequent.
