Uh...why?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
What exactly is the "something more than that"?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Would be more helpful if you actually explained what the squick was.

I'm not following you. I don't personally ship them but only because I really like their consensually unequal friendship (he's her commander, she's his faithful second), and because I'm pretty much sated for un-fucked up het by canon shows and books. But I'm not squicked by them. I'm just kind of meh at the thought of their romance.

Unless you really dislike boss/underling because of the power dynamics inherent in that, I'm not really seeing what is squick worthy.

That's the only thing I can come up with. Maybe OP's hesitance to talk about it is because she has a personal experience that gave her (or him) that squick? I can't imagine why else it would be such a big deal.

I'm with everyone else, wondering what exactly is so squicky about this ship to you.

I've never really been into the idea of them together either, but I love their friendship.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel this way about a couple of pairings as well. Seeing fanart of them or hearing that someone ships them just fills me with unexplainable rage and something very close to disgust. I like the characters, and I like them as friends, but put together in a romantic pairing... ew.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
For some reason you sound way more relatable than the secret, Anon.

Seconding the anon above me; You are more easier to relate than the OP. I think I have the same thing with Ferb/Isabella from Phineas and Ferb. I like them as friends, but for some reason whenever I encounter a fic or fanart shipping them...

RAAAAAAGE...

And I have no idea why. -_-

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Why is "type" in quotes?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I am going to guess that what the OP has against the ship is the military commander/commandee aspect, because IRL a colonel and his direct subordinate strikes me as... sketchy, at best, and to my limited knowledge against a whole pile of regulations. I can see how someone might react strongly to that dynamic, especially if they were well-informed about real-life problematic cases.

But then again, that might be the "type" that they're mostly indifferent to? Which leaves the question why they find this particular case squicky? ...I don't know, it's a confusing secret. But I can come up with an explanation for why someone might be squicked.

Didn't this end up being canon in the manga or something? I only watched the (first) anime, and I remember really hoping they didn't go the romantic route with this, because good, solid, non-romantic male/female friendships like this are so rare in fiction.

It's more implied in the manga/Brotherhood, but it's never officially canon that they get together.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It was never shown in the manga (though it was heavily implied). But the mangaka later stated that they were in love and stayed together for the rest of their lives, but they just couldn't actually get married because of regulations. Whether or not you interpret that as being canon is up to you.

I think your secret would be more interesting if you said...why? Squick is a pretty major feeling, why is this type of relationship your squick?

Is it that they're coworkers? That one is of higher rank than the other? Mixed hair? Hawkeye is just too badass for him?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it because he's her superior? If that's the case then shouldn't Lan Fan and Ling as a pairing squick you out too?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to ship them to hell and back a few years ago, but if you don't explain how you feel about it, all I can say is... okay? Like what you like, dislike what you dislike, no one's going to give you a hard time for it as long as you don't act like an asshole.

I thought the pairing was fun and sexy in the first anime, then really hated it in Brotherhood. But I wouldn't say "squick," it's more like oh this was full of flirty ust and now it's sad and codependent.
dragonimp: (Default)

[personal profile] dragonimp 2012-09-09 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
That was my progression, too! I still have a soft spot for them from the first anime, but in the manga the 'ship pretty much died after Riza's freak-out/mental breakdown.

I thought so too, but, thing is, I fucking love sad and codependent relationships. I ate it up back when the manga was ongoing (never watched Brotherhood though)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-09 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
idk. I think I'd have a mental breakdown too if the person I love died horribly.

Losing the will to live is a bit much, but hell it WAS a mental breakdown. There's no saying she wouldn't have moved on once she had cleared her head.

Okay but ... why? If you don't really care about the characters and are indifferent to the "type" (whatever that's referring to), then why? Why does this pairing in particular push you over into "squick"?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-09 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
congratulations on making a secret most people are baffled about. Ever gonna elaborate?

You should eleborate us more.

To me they're the best het couple in anime.
