Didn't this end up being canon in the manga or something? I only watched the (first) anime, and I remember really hoping they didn't go the romantic route with this, because good, solid, non-romantic male/female friendships like this are so rare in fiction.

It's more implied in the manga/Brotherhood, but it's never officially canon that they get together.

It was never shown in the manga (though it was heavily implied). But the mangaka later stated that they were in love and stayed together for the rest of their lives, but they just couldn't actually get married because of regulations. Whether or not you interpret that as being canon is up to you.

Arakawa never stated "they were in love and stayed together for the rest of their lives".

Unless you have proof of this.

She said only thing in their way is military regulations.
