Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief

I was excited because the book was such an easy translation from book to film but then everyone involved with the movie was like, "LOL No. *shits all over cool premise*"

I saw it this never having read the books, and I agree--it looked interesting but just wasn't terribly good.

And don't get me started on them turning Hades into a villain...

Hades usually gets the villain treatment

Yeah. I avoided watching Disney's Hercules for a long because of that.

OT: Does anyone have recommendations for movies or tv shows that DON'T make Hades/Pluto evil (or at least any more evil than the other gods--let's face it, none of the Greek or Roman gods were what people in this day and age would perceive as "nice").

That's what I liked so much about the book series. All the gods are really flawed and even their kids call them out on it, and the first book kind of depended on us to assume that it'll always be Hades as the bad guy but they turned things around and at the end of the day Hades was the bad guy.

But, I can't think of any movies or tv shows that give a...better portrayal of the gods.

In Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Hades is a recurring character and actually one of the better gods, in that he's only interested in doing his job, not ruling the world. While he does eventually become an enemy to Xena, it's only because all the Olympians become her enemy at a certain point in the series. All I can think of.

Well, the Percy Jackson book series has a non-evil Hades, actually. They just screwed that way up in the film.

I think the book is the example of something not good with a good premise too.

nayrt

I agree. I think the premise is pretty neat but the writing is...well, not really awful but not really all that good either

DA

It's certainly not "high literature" or anything, but it reads to me like a teenage boy writing down his life, and that's pretty much what it is, so I enjoyed it.

...I actually liked this movie. Granted, I haven't read the books (though I want to!) so idk what they were working with and how exactly it should have been.

OMG, YES.

Those books were so good, and the movie was crap. :(

I didn't mind the actors so much. I think they should have been given the chance to act out the original concept.

For example, I'm a big fan of Jake Abel. He looks the part of Luke, and I think, given the opportunity, he'd do a great job of it. He can really do "villainous for sympathetic reasons" and even "a little bit insane". Also, daddy issues. He does daddy issues well.

May Zeus strike down whoever was in charge of the actual execution, though. Or turn them into a tree.

I agree about the actors. They came in and did what was given to them, so I can't be angry with them about how the movie turned out.
