Shitty movie with good premise

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Because I just finished watching a movie that would have been awesome if it had been written differently.

Push. That frickin' movie. So much wasted potential, and then it had a "sequel hopeful" ending with some ridiculous cliffhanger feel to it. Obviously it didn't do well enough for a sequel, or I wouldn't still be bitter about this after three years.

Good universe for fusion fic, though, I have to admit that.

[In before "But your icon..."]

Brave. To be fair the premise (Mother/Daughter story) wasn't bad, just the story they built around it was.

This covers most horror movies. Especially monster movies. And especially, especially vampire movies. The last good, modern vampire movie I saw was ironically called "Suck." The rest have been bad or boring. How hard is it to write a good vampire film?

was the movie you saw "Branded"? Because I'm seeing that complaint leveled at it all over the place right now!

As for me, X-men: First Class, hands down. In more capable hands that movie could have been So. Much. More.

so many zombie movies. when done well, zombie movies are excellent apocalyptic fiction; i don't know how people keep fucking it up when george romero keeps showing them how to do it right.

So many low budget sci-fis. Especially if the producer is the director and writer and editor (and sometimes actor and composer, etc.). You've got a great or decent idea, you finally have the money and equipment and right people together and you want to slap all your ideas on screen all at once because who knows when you'll get another chance. Things get messy and convuluted because they tend not to get the heavy editing they need.

As for other movies? I wish the film adaptation of Priest have been written better. (I never read the graphic novel.) It was just starting to get interesting and the bam. The end.

Chronicles of Riddick: I looooove the character of Riddick, wished the movie would have different. I hated what they did with Jack.

Babylon AD: Again, I like the character Vin Deisel plays; I like the dystopian thing. Thought the majority of the plot was half-assed at best.

Book of Eli: Oh, man. It was like my dream of a Fallout-type movie had come true. The setting and characters were great. But what the hell was with the weird ending? There were parts I would have changed, definitely.

There are a lot more I can't think of right now.

Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief

I was excited because the book was such an easy translation from book to film but then everyone involved with the movie was like, "LOL No. *shits all over cool premise*"

Herschell Gordon Lewis' The Wizard of Gore. A magician "tortures" women on stage but they're actually fine, and leave the theater in one piece... only to be found later dead of the same wounds. But it's in a locked room, or some other fashion where the guy couldn't have done it himself. Heck, the first woman dies in public, where someone murdering a woman in that fashion would have been noticed. It's an interesting idea, but Lewis was a very, very low budget director, so it has bad effects, terrible acting, and is just... not good.

The original Tron movie. I love that movie because of its potential, not because of its actual story.

Inception.

While I crazy enjoy this movie when I first saw the trailer I thought the Mal and Dom characters were going to be rivals in the dreamworld business...and instead she was dead.

I just wanted the two of them battling each other across the globe for people's secrets.

People have mostly covered my picks, but.

I'd probably toss pretty much any video game movie out there. A lot of games could go great as movies, but they don't have much effort put into them. I know there's been a Halo movie in development hell for ages and I'm aching for it to be to video game movies what The Dark Knight was for superhero movies.

That doesn't mean I don't love Wing Commander, but I love it partly because it's a cheesy terrible movie.

The Invention of Lying. The premise is a world where no one knows how to tell lies, and one guy figures out how to and becomes unstoppable. But that somehow becomes conflated with no one ever wanting to have children with ugly people, and the love interest basically being in favor of eugenics. Ugh, such a stupid mid-plot switch.

Prometheus. How do you start with an idea that fab and end with a movie that mediocre?

The Conan: The Barbarian remake. They had everything necessary to make a fun, if not clever, sword-and-sorcery movie, except for a coherent script. It was just...why would a movie that looked so slick with such likeable actors have such awful writing? Wouldn't that be the cheapest part to achieve?

Then again, $200 million dollar Avatar clearly spent five bucks on the story, so. Apparently it's a thing.

Also, every werewolf movie, ever.

In Time with Justin Timberlake. The idea of time as currency was fascinating, but the characters all fell flat.

Pretty much everything by Kurt Wimmer. Ultraviolet, Law Abiding Citizen, Equilibrium, especially Equilibrium...

Cool ideas, but executed stupidly. I kind of wish he had the chance to write episodes of these stories, like a series or mini-series, because his plots wrap up so ham-handedly rushed because there's not enough time to expand on anything.

Daybreakers.

I liked the concept!! A lot!! But that cure at the end? All I can see is it ending badly and have like....less than 10 people left alive after that.

I hated that ending, but the rest I thought was awesome.

Especially Sam Neill.

Oh to add another: John Carter.

Now, THIS one...it was all over the place, but...I thought it was so bad it was good? I had a lot of fun seeing that movie with my bf and we got a kick out of it, but to say it was flop in writing is an understatement. ^^;;

The Island. I love the idea of the lottery and the cloning and ethics behind that, but it was made by Michael fucking Bay? Whose idea was that? Oi. Could've been amazing.

I hear it's based on a book so I might scope it out.
