The fanboys on the big Gallifrey Base forum probably still like him, the ones who don't just complain for fun and/or bcos it isn't Old Who, that is. (But I've run screaming for the hills and won't come back.)

I have not heard of that place but you make it sound like a hive of evil.

Does this hive represent the majority of viewers?

"Mainstream" Doctor Who fandom is a hive of evil, in my rarefied opinion. Decades of wank piled on top of one another. IDK, I realised I only ever hung out there when I was feeling masochistic. I'll still watch the show but I'm done with that site. Though when I left, there was beginning to be an influx of fangirls, and they were generally more positive (if sneered at by some of the old-timers).

GB doesn't represent the majority of viewers at all (known colloquially as the "Not We" on the forum), I suppose ratings would be the best way to assess Moffat era vs RTD era in terms of reception.

Oh, I forgot, Steven Moffat used to post on that forum, or rather, its predecessor.

I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

The only 2 seasons without a significant change (new doctor, last episodes etc) have been series 3 and 6. Series 2 and 5 could be compared too (new doctor).the only thin missing are the still massive I-player numbers.

Well, if people hate him so much they aren't showing it. The only way to get him to change would be to let his ratings drop.

This times a billion. I went running from Gallifrey Bases ages ago.

Since when did fandom of any kind ever represent the majority of viewers? The majority of viewers are always "norms", "not-we" (watch Kinda), "non-fen": they see things differently, and care about different things. Lord help us if programmes tailored thenselves to the demands of fans.

You know, if people haven't seen Kinda, I can see that the whole "not-we" thing might sound very different. It's extremely appropriate (and pretty funny) if you're familiar with the story.

I'm kind of assuming that with the internet, fandom is becoming a more normal hobby. The "norms" are joining in with us, if only a little bit.

Not everyone in fandom has to be hugely active, go to cons, etc. Maybe I worded the question wrong but I'm more interested in the strength of a fandom and how large it is vs. the amount of fans who enjoy the canon. Sure, it's most likely that it's way smaller but comparing that size discrepancy among fandoms and over the years is interesting to me.

Oh, Doctor Who fandom is huge, and always has been really. But Doctor Who has a huge audience (something ridiculous, like half the UK, watch the occasional episode, and episodes get viewing figures that amount to like a tenth of the UK population), so you'd expect that.

The more centralised fandom certainly used to centre around Doctor Who magazine, and then Outpost Gallifrey when it was called that, and then The Doctor Who Forum when Outpost Gallifrey closed. Doctor Who magazine is still central to this, but not such a necessary hub given the internet. This is where you will find fans who have grown up in the fandom, fans who have been fans for decades, fans who went on to create and get funding for the new series (2005), fans who wrote the officially published tie-in material and unofficial stuff, who made thinly-veiled videos of new Doctor Who adventures (by other names) which sometimes even featured actual actors from the series.

It is old-school fandom, and it assumes a basic familiarity with the decades of source material (even if that familiarity comes from reading various condensed guides and annuals, rather than from watching much of it). It also has various members who have been getting wound up since 2005, as newbies arrive all fresh and bushy-tailed, without knowing the 'rules' or having been through the 'pain' of the cancelled years.

There used to be a joke: "How many Dr Who fans does it take to screw in a lightbulb? They don't: they just sit around and wait for it to come back on." Feel the anguish!

But there are loads of other places on the internet where people have started their own mini-fandoms without any reference to the old established one.

Oh, I should add that The Doctor Who Forum closed in 2009, and there wasn't a single replacement. Gallifrey Base is run by many of the same people who ran The Doctor Who Forum, and took a lot of the community (but not all of it), so the fandom is somewhat more scattered than it once was.

There are always some in the established fandom who wail that all the new stuff is awful, but frankly I don't think they remember what the old stuff is actually like.

That's so cool! I find fandoms of shows just as interesting as the show itself sometimes. It's like controlled chaos. So many people who love the same thing but at the same time they may or may not get along. Everyone interpreting the source material differently. I suppose with a group so huge it would be difficult for any sort of movement to amass. This would simple be because no matter how many people you get to your side there are even more who are ambivalent to your cause or actively against it.
