I love Big Damn Heroes - people who you *know* are good, going in and saving the world, all guns blazing. Of course, there has to be some emotional connection to the characters, for me.

I love that one too! Before I discovered TV Tropes I used to call it 'To the rescue!' and sometimes I would call out 'x to the rescue!' when it happened onscreen. I still do it sometimes.

^Also: bonus points for angst, Tragic Hero, or Stoic/Iron Woobiedom. Or if the hero/es manage to cream the villains against totally improbable odds, with crappy action sequences (think BSG original series).
