Stupid fandom tropes you secretly love

[personal profile] intrigueing 2012-09-08 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone want to share fandom tropes that you objectively know are dumb, corny, illogical, cliched, predictable, or tiresome, but you still totally adore?

I lovelovelove it when the villain makes a 180-degree Heel Face Turn near the end of a movie, even for very silly contrived reasons, like the hero telling them You Are Better Than This or something.

I also love everything to do with The Power Of Teamwork/Friendship/Love/Trust, no matter how cheesy or preachy or anvilicious it is.

I can't remember a single time when I wasn't charmed by That Scene where a big crowd of people applaud or cheer NASA-style after the heroes Save The World.

When it's revealed that two characters in love or having an awesome friendship have met before when they were kids. Bonus points if they mysteriously forgot about it until they meet again. I guess this works too if they met in a past life/another dimension.

oh, i'm totally drawn to redemption scenarios. which is why i get so angry when the redeemed character gets mercilessly killed off.

Super-angsty love triangles or, even better, a love triangle connected to a love triangle connected to a love triangle, or just a gigantic love polygon. (Honestly, this is half the reason I love Pretear, since my favorite character is involved in count 'em, THREE love triangles! Another part is...)

Fairytale "retellings", even if they only borrow surface details of the original fairytale.

Amnesia stories. Anytime a character loses their memory and develops new skills/depths/insights a a result. I know it's cheesy and stupid and most likely impossible but I love it so much!

Those long speeches made just before the final battle/the end. My friends all groan at them, but man, it's actually one of favourite tropes.

I'm a complete sucker for couples that turn out to be soulmates or are fated to be together across the ages. It just always seems so amazing and romantic ;w;

X doesn't die stories, and time travel. Soooo overdone, but I will click on any story with that as its premise, no matter how bad it sounds.

When there's an emergency and strangers work together to help out, I always tear up. Always. And I'm not much of a crier, normally.

I hated Angels and Demons. Like REALLY hated it. But when Tom Hanks was trying to save the cardinal from drowning in the fountain (by himself), and suddenly a bunch of random people come and lift him out, oh man I almost started bawling.

Anything involving time-travel and h/c where one of the characters becomes disabled, especially blinded.

Power of Love/Friendship gets me too. I feel no regret for it. It's just so inspiring.

Anything with transformation sequences. Digivolving, henshin sequences, I don't care. I love it. Calling attacks and flashy animations for fighting too. All of that.

As far as fanfic goes, Peggy Sues. (Character (s) go(es) back in time to fix things.) I love those, especially when they change it up a whole lot from canon.

I love what TV Tropes refers to "Shut Up, Hannibal!": The bad guy starts monologing, and either the good guy lets him finish, then calmly tells him why everything he's said and done is complete bullshit. Or maybe, in the case of more action-oriented heroes, they let them get maybe a sentence or two in before they just start beating the bad guy's ass.

I guess in general, I just love a good villain beat down; and verbal/intellectual one can be just as satisfying as physical ones.

When someone is conflicted because they have simultaneous crushes on ~ordinary friend y~ and ~mysterious magical stranger Y~ and then oh what do you know, they're the same and everything's good.

I also always root for the childhood friend in love triangle, even though they usually never win. I just love couples that have been friends forever first.

Estranged family members reconciling their fractious relationship. Actually, I don't even need the 'estranged' part. Whenever family members confess that they love and admire a sibling/parent, I get all wibbly.

Plots where a group of people are broke and have to do something ~questionable~ to get money. It doesn't matter if it ends in lulz or in tears or something in between, I will always love this plot device.

I dunno if this counts as "stupid" but it's certainly overused and cliched, so I'll put it up: when a dickish/abrasive/cynical character acts ridiculously sappy or sentimental or romantic, but hides it Because Of Reasons even though it makes no sense to.

Like, I practically died of adorbs at that bit in the Avengers where Tony is all rude and dismissive of Coulson, but then turns around and is all "Just say the word and I'll fly you to Portland to see your girlfriend, you gotta keep the love alive man!" when he just barely overheard Coulson mention it as they walked out the door.

hurt/comfort, especially when the one who is hurt has to grudgingly accept help and comfort from the other party and ESPECIALLY when the other party is overzealous about it.

I love Big Damn Heroes - people who you *know* are good, going in and saving the world, all guns blazing. Of course, there has to be some emotional connection to the characters, for me.

Rivals of dubious morality teaming up against a common enemy too evil for them to ignore. In fact, when any character of dubious morality has hard lines they never cross, and won't tolerate anyone who does.

Arguments in the rain! Love it when people are screaming at each other in a pouring storm like they couldn't scream just as well under an awning or something.

Heroes who manage to gain respect through sheer force of personality and guts, even if they don't have two brain cells to rub together and don't make a lick of sense.

When an expert comes in to a failing group and starts whipping everybody and everything into shape and they get badass. ("I'll Make A Man Out Of You").

Nakama. Any nakama, ever. People who will go to bat for each other without question because they are family and best friends (even if they hate each other half the time), ugh, I love it so much.

Everything is going to shit and the battle looks like it'll be hell, and then SOME group comes to save the day and it's epic and lovely. Like in Return of the King with Aragon, or in TT with Gandalf.

Even better when it's nature fighting back, like in Avatar. Or, yet again, LotR with the Ents.
