The Slave Breakers by maculate_giraffe (or something like that. google it, it'll come up.)

It's awesome, and up on lj in all its parts. It's also an epic slave!fic (and they say women aren't kinky...) but its excellently crafted. It has an almost disturbingly likeable protaganist and it explores the psychology and social dynamic of being property (both in slave-slave and owner-slave relations). It grapples with the social justice/ethical issues of slavery and makes some very clever observations on the clash of idealist social justice vs. the reality of living in a flawed world. It's really quite interesting when you see how negatively readers react to the character who I personally refer to as the SJW-girl despite the fact she's the character with the strongest no-slavery sentiments. (An idea I'm sure most people nowadays are on board with.)

Also it has really hot porn. :P

♥ a couple in the list I've seen before, but I love to see opinions from other fandom people!

Strange Fortune by Josh Lanyon. I wanted this to be the first book in a trilogy or an ongoing series oh so very badly. It's set in an alternate reality!India where magic is real, the magical fallout from an earlier rebellion has basically rendered the British Isles uninhabitable, one of the main characters is the son and grandson of two of the fomenters of that rebellion -- basically alternate!Brits who felt that the alternate!Indians deserved independence and to be more than just a source of exploitable magical and mundane resources for the Empire -- and the other is an impoverished Imperial cavalry officer of North American extraction (specifically, from a New Orleans in a North America that never successfully broke away from colonial control). Very aware of the "magical brown person"/"white boy does native better than the natives do" tropes and averts/subverts them pretty much totally. Packs an astonishing quantity of entertaining alternate history into a relatively short page count, along with the smexings and the witty badinage.

I'm quite in love with Kirith Kirin by Jim Grimsley at the moment. It was out of print in actual book form but now exists as an e-book as well. Sometimes, the descriptions of magic and lore and everything can get a little tiring, but other than that, I like it a lot.

WHAT IT'S AN EBOOK NOW

Seriously, I waited years until someone on amazon was stupid enough to post it for like 20 bucks. It was my Holy Grail for a while.

The very reason I only read it a short while ago! A bit too expensive for not knowing whether or not it was worth reading (oh, but it was!) plus quite the high shipping cost to where I live. So the e-book version made me very happy!

Brethren: Raised by Wolves (by W.A. Hoffman)
It is so so good <3
No summary would do it justice, just some keywords: pirates, ~1660, young lords
