You should read Mind Fuck by Manna Francis. Best original m/m novel I've ever read. And it's available for free online.

I was *just* about to comment if this was the time to recommend the Administration series. Because I will never get tired of recommend it. I want Manna Francis to have alllll of the readers and money and whatever she wants. Best m/m novels indeed.

OP, if you're reading this, have a link to the author's website where you can read most of the series for free online. Though the books are well worth buying. Just sayin'.

Please tell me it's better than the summary there suggests? Because I've read a hell of a lot more M/M high fantasy fiction with better plots than that that also have great characterization and writing style...

I know summaries can be misleading though, so if you can convince me it isn't the rapefest it comes off as in that blurb, I might try it :/ Otherwise...questiong ur tastes rn.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-10 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno, I'm going to agree with the recommendation for Mind Fuck. It's a really compelling series as far as m/m goes (I liked it so much reading it for free online that I went and bought the full series of the paperbacks). I recommend that and the book God Eaters by Jesse Hajicek.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-10 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It definitely isn't a rapefest. ...though at times it looks like it's going to go that way, I'll admit. Not!France is a bit... over-sexed. Okay, they both are, but eh. It's not front and center that much.

There's really not a hell of a lot of sex in the books outside of Not!France's court antics. The entire second book is a military campaign that sticks pretty close to being nothing but a military campaign with rampant UST.

Laurent and his character progression alone is worth reading it for. The author does a very good job of having the readers follow Damen's journey of starting out absolutely loathing the guy and very slowly warming up to him.

See, that's the beauty part of it. CP deals really WELL with the 'captured slave' trope in a way that is NOT "OMG, I am teh captured slave and I lurves teh healing cock and teh stockholmz syndrome, yesyesyes I do!" In fact, it's pretty much the opposite of that trope. If rape is a trigger, I can tell you that while there is a mess of non-con in the world around the main characters, their relationship is surprisingly non-rapey, which is actually a plot point.

I read it the other day and it gave me serious novel hangover in the best way. I dunno if it's the best m/m original out there, 'cause I usually don't read those much. But it sure is -- by FAR -- the best one I've read.

I know what you mean, OP. I adore The Captive Prince.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-10 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Well. Now I feel like a jerk for not liking the first few chapters and giving it up half-way when I first tried reading it.

Does it really get better?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-11 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
It really, really does. I think the first book is the weaker of the two books currently out, especially the first half, but the second book completely makes up for it and more, IMO. It's just good - so good that you could cut out the romance entirely and I'd still love it. And this is coming from someone who hates slavefic as a rule and only started reading "Captive Prince" to see how soon it would piss me off.

It might still not be for you in the end, but I seriously encourage you to give it another shot (maybe sort of skim the earliest chapters to get to the meatier parts).

The Slave Breakers by maculate_giraffe (or something like that. google it, it'll come up.)

It's awesome, and up on lj in all its parts. It's also an epic slave!fic (and they say women aren't kinky...) but its excellently crafted. It has an almost disturbingly likeable protaganist and it explores the psychology and social dynamic of being property (both in slave-slave and owner-slave relations). It grapples with the social justice/ethical issues of slavery and makes some very clever observations on the clash of idealist social justice vs. the reality of living in a flawed world. It's really quite interesting when you see how negatively readers react to the character who I personally refer to as the SJW-girl despite the fact she's the character with the strongest no-slavery sentiments. (An idea I'm sure most people nowadays are on board with.)

Also it has really hot porn. :P

Well, I haven't read it yet [but thanks for pointing it out!] but I *can* say that I do like how the author lists that it has both m/m sex *and* m/f in the trigger warning/'THIS IS IN THIS' section. It's a nice change.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-11 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Captive Prince is SO good. The title and summary just don't do it justice. It's... a slavefic, but it's not. And the narrative is just so fucking smart, I can't get over it.

on that note, is book 3 being started any time soon? :D

(Anonymous) 2012-09-11 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Lawd I actually have no idea why this fic is so popular. Yea it's not the usual master/slave fic but it isn't really that compelling imo. Different tastes I guess.

Everyone check out Prisoner by Megan Derr if you want m/m fantasy. Dancing in the dark is pretty good too.

I'm with you, OP. I mean, it's not like I've read an amazing amount of original m/m fic in my life, so I've probably missed out on a lot.

I did read the more well-known m/m fantasy books as a teen (Lackey, Huff, Flewelling, Rice, Kushner) as well as some of the lesser-well-known (Robin Bailey, Elizabeth A Lynn, some I've probably forgotten), and Captive Prince is more compelling than all of them to me. Though Flewelling probably came closest for me, so look up "Luck in the Shadows", OP. (And I'm probably always going to have a mini teenage hero-worship crush on Lackey's Vanyel.)

I tried God Eaters a few years ago and didn't get very far. Just not my thing, I guess...I don't even remember anymore why it didn't appeal. What I read of PL Nunn didn't appeal, either.

Looking at the synopsis for the Administration...well, look at that. I've apparently been confusing it in my mind with another story about breaking slaves that I didn't care for. I'll be checking that out, then. Thank you, other commenters!

Otherwise...I've recently been checking out the fics/books linked from the CP page on Goodreads and I haven't had much luck. Last Pure Human? Nope. Frank-in-Love? Kinda cute, but nope. The Sailor's Superior General was a lot of fun and I liked the characters, but it had more grammar errors and id-logic-stretching than you could shake a fish at. I'm about 9 chapters into an original novel called Kei's Gift, and I don't like it at all. Probably going to drop it. I need to start checking out more actual published novels, but other than The Administration, I don't know where to start.

I will be stalking the recs above like a sonnovabitch.

So just wanted to let you know that you aren't alone, OP.

I haven't read any other original m/m fic, but even before I've read Captive Prince I had this imagine in my head about what a typical fantasy m/m porn book would be like, and CP is everything I imagined it to be. The story and world is boring, the characters are annoying and bland and the sex scenes are boring to read (and even the consensual one in the last chapter was creepy as fuck, everyone was like "OMG IT FINALLY HAPPENED" when it happened while I was "dude, he's acting kinda strange...".

Not trying to step on anyone's toes, but like...is it okay to put that up on Goodreads?

While it's original ficition, it's not published...and an author I follow in fandom freaked out when a fan put her stuff up on Goodreads and made them take it down.

Also, the reason I like this fic so much (and have followed it for years) is that it's exactly the kind of slave!fic I was looking for.

I reaaaallly hate slave!fic where the slaves are totally into it and are very submissive; I would prefer the slaves not like it and fight their captivity. Submissiveness is actually a huge turn off for me, so it's hard to find this dynamic and have it played out so well.

Sorry to be annoying, but...

(Anonymous) 2012-09-11 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't "damen" mean "women" in German? This isn't the first time I've seen it as a name for a male in fiction (the other time was in that Evermore series by Alyson Noel). I think the name they're trying for is Damon, like in Damon and Pythias. I'm not usually bothered by weird spellings of names, but this one is annoying.

"Captive Prince" is by no means without flaws, but it's amazingly intelligent, IMO. I feel like what helps is that the story is not reliant on the romance alone. In fact, I think Laurent and Damen could be platonic, and it would change very little about what makes their interaction and their world so compelling. It's fully-rounded, while most m/m depends on one thing, two dudes eventually sexin'. Nothing wrong with that, god knows, but when you're in the mood for a more expansive story that just happens to have a m/m couple, it's much harder to find.

I really kinda hated the first chapters but once it got past the whole 'I am going to use sex against you and you are going to like it, ahahahaha' kind of bullshit, I was drawn in a lot more. Still mildly pissed that after -SPOILER!- Laurent had Damen whipped like that, he turned out to be the love interest after all. Sorry, but I feel that kind of thing is pretty much unforgivable.

Also, as an aspiring writer posting online m/m fantasy fiction, I wanna know how she got such an audience. XD
