Confession: I don't wear makeup because I don't give a shit. And I'm pretty sure men don't give a shit about me in the romantic sense, either, makeup or no, so it's always seemed pointless to me to think that a few colors on my face suddenly makes me desirable.

I know I should give a shit. I know I should want to look presentable and more mature and grown up. And then I'm like fuck it. You're lucky if I have gel in my hair today.

(Caveat: this is not meant to be a slam against anyone. These are my own personal views about my own personal habits, and not meant to be a suggestive general statement.)

Haha, I feel that way about my hair. It's lucky if I run my fingers through it while it's damp to detangle it, and then I just use a hairband to keep it out of my face at work because I only get it cut once a year (the only salon I've found that didn't have me leaving in tears is in another country) so it's often in that 'in between' stage where it's long enough to be annoying but not long enough to be able to ponytail it.

The fact that a woman thinks she has to wear make up to look "presentable" and "grown up" is kinda fucked up.

This isn't a criticism of you, anon; it's a criticism of a society that says women have to smear a bunch of crap all over their faces just to leave the damn house.

Must you call it "crap"? You're implying that any woman (or anyone, period) who applies it is doing something wrong, which is just as misogynistic as assuming that it has to be applied to be "presentable", and honestly, as someone who enjoys putting makeup on because of the colors, and patterns I can make, I'm rather offended, though I agree with the rest of your sentiment.

Okay, for the record, I'm talking about women who really don't like make up (as the person I was replying to seemed to be) but feels like they have to or they're "ugly".

Honestly, I call it "crap" because whenever I've worn it, I find it extremely unpleasant to wear. So it kind of feels like crap to me.

But you're right, there are people who enjoy wearing it, and I realize calling it crap can be seen as demeaning to them. I'm sorry.

If you feel unpleasant when you're wearing makeup then you're doin' it wrong. I'm sorry. Unless you're wearing fake eyeslashes or something..

Thank you for the apology. I get it sometimes from people in my real life, so hearing it on F!S was kind if hurtful. I do understand people not being comfortable wearing makeup- until I figured out some basics, I was uncomfortable wearing makeup (not trying to imply that that is always the case, just that that was the case for me), but I enjoy(ed) makeup, and other people putting makeup on me.

It just depends on the person, really.

Fwiw, I think makeup is crap. Don't think others who use it are, mind, but I do think the stuff is crap. Especially what goes into it and how it smells and ugh.

Biggest concession to 'girly stuff' i do is my brows waxed, since i'm blind as a bat without my glasses on and can't see the damn things, so plucking is pretty much impossible. And they're very dark and grow down to my eyelids which looks weird.

I don't. :( But I doubt applying make up will make me look substantially older. I'll still probably look like a teenager. Just now a teenager with makeup.

(I'm 25. I look somewhere between 15 and 17, though someone a few weeks ago mistook me for a 12yr old. And this was after a long good look at my face.)

Heh. I'm 45, i'm pretty sure i *look* 45. Plus - grey hairs. Whoo! I luff my greys.

I can understand looking a lot younger than you are and wanting to 'fix' that so as to be taken more seriously at a job or an interview.

yay I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't give a shit. I was starting to feel alone reading this thread. I just have no interest in spending ages putting stuff on my face when it looks fine in the first place! and also, I don't know how to apply makeup anyway haha. And I freak out when anything gets near my eyes. I've had people do my makeup for balls before and I get so tense and stressed when things go near my eyes. It's kind of weird. So you know why would I want to put myself through all that suffering just to look fancy?

i am aware i'm not a special snowflake for not liking makeup. it was just within the context of this thread that I was feeling a bit alone.

+1 I enjoy makeup for dates or interviews and such, but I just can't be bothered to wear it every day. I figure if a guy likes me he'll like me for me and not for the layer of foreign chemicals on my face, and none of my actual co workers or peers really cares at the moment because I am a biochemistry student which half exempts me from wearing stuff that makes me want to fiddle with my eyes and face while I'm working with something hazardous.

Plus, if you're lazy and you don't dress up when you do actually get dressed up sexy people always look at you like you're a new person which is nice.

Also, the texture of some makeup and most hair products is (imo) absolutely disgusting. My body can just tell it's not supposed to be there and it bothers me.

Glad someone else out there is makeup free too :)
