When feminists defend make-up wearing by saying it's for "themselves" I can't relate. The only reason I put any effort into my appearance is because I know it makes me more desirable to men.

I know this is bad, so I never bring it up. :/ Tbh, I wouldn't try to make myself look better if I knew guys didn't care.

ITT every girl who wears makeup is straight.

Well, no, but I feel like men judge women more harshly on appearance than women do to other women or men.

In the large scale of things we all wear makeup because society tells us too, like I technically wear makeup for myself but I know that I only think makeup looks good because society has been drilling it into my head for years that it looks good.

That pretty much goes for most things women do to feel pretty, and I don't think anyone should judge you when we're all doing something similar either consciously or unconsciously.

(BTW though I do feel women should do whatever they want in terms of their appearance, I just think we need to recognize how society skews or views of what is beautiful and what isn't.)

I had a lot of acne when I was a teenager and it left marks on my face. I don't have any interest in being desirable to people but I don't like seeing them whenever I pass a reflective surface so I cover them up. I like wearing eyeliner and mascara because it makes my eyes look pretty to me and being pretty is nice.

It boils down to that I like passing mirrors and liking what I see. I'm don't think I'm ugly but if I can make that reflection prettier by spending 15 minutes in the morning why not?

IDK it sounds simple enough to me.

I started wearing make up when I went to an all-girls school in middle school. I reverted back to practically nothing in a co-ed high school.
I did it to look better because I looked slightly better in photos with makeup covering acne and such.

Idk, I personally only wear makeup for photoshoots and job-related stuff because I know it's what's expected of me.

I put makeup on even when I'm going to be home all day and no one's going to see me. I just feel unfinished without it. It's like not brushing my teeth or hair.

Well, that's just you.Not everyone is you, so it's really not that startling or hard to understand that some people don't wear it for men (or other women) just because you do.
Although I don't get why you can't relate? It's not that different from wearing a nice shirt or shoes or something because you like it.

But seriously. It's because they're not you.

Because they think it's fun to experiment with different colors, styles, stuff like that? That's why I thought it was awesome when I was a little girl, and even though I'm not into it anymore, I know some women still are for that reason.

I wear make up even if I'm walking half a block to my grandma's house.
I have awful dark circles under my eyes that coupled with me being really pale make me look kind of sick without any make up, and I really don't like people asking me if I'm fine or if I sleep enough (I am and I do, no matter how many hours I sleep or how healthy I feel, they never go away xD)

So, there you have a "for themselves" reason :)

I don't wear makeup at all normally, meaning no foundation, lipstick, mascara etc., only lip balm to keep them from drying. Even for parties and suchlike I only use lipstick and powder, since using anything more makes me want to wash my face. No-one has ever tried to make me use makeup, although most women I know use at least some.

eh...i used to not wear any but i took a lesson at MAC and after that i started seeing make-up as extensions of my outfits, and since i'm pretty vain about clothes this changed my outlook by quite a bit. but mean...like, how else can you affect how your face looks short of surgery? if i feel kind of like a ~~femme fetale~~ today i can do a rly hot flare with liquid eyeliner, but i want to look ~younger and fresh-faced tomorrow i can do it just as easily with different colors/techniques. the way i see it, it's like getting dressed up-- ultimately it's about how i feel/what i need that day, because guys are never gonna all agree on what looks attractive on a girl ("oh she wears too much make-up why can't she look natural wahhhh" etc etc).

Everyone is different Anon. Some people just like wearing make-up, regardless of how other people will see them.

Somewhat unrelated: I never wear make-up, I've never worn it. I don't even know how to apply it... This however never however stopped my grandmother from getting me the same set of horrible red and pink lipsticks at Christmas every year.

Confession: I don't wear makeup because I don't give a shit. And I'm pretty sure men don't give a shit about me in the romantic sense, either, makeup or no, so it's always seemed pointless to me to think that a few colors on my face suddenly makes me desirable.

I know I should give a shit. I know I should want to look presentable and more mature and grown up. And then I'm like fuck it. You're lucky if I have gel in my hair today.

(Caveat: this is not meant to be a slam against anyone. These are my own personal views about my own personal habits, and not meant to be a suggestive general statement.)

I really don't care what men think, but I wear makeup anyway. Why? Because I pretty much look 14 without it, and I work in the very general public (retail) in a kind of upscale shopping area, and I like how I look in it (in certain ways) anyway.

Wow. I'm sorry that putting an effort to your appearance doesn't make you feel good. I put on makeup because it's fun tbh.

it's not just feminists who defend wearing makeup. a lot of people enjoy putting on makeup and nice clothes (men included, though more the clothes part and not so much the makeup). not everyone, certainly, but a fair few. it's called narcissism.

moreover, a lot of people consider fashion and makeup an art form. so, you know, maybe you're just really shallow if you can't see the intrinsic value in aesthetics.

personally, i fall into both categories. i have some narcissism going on, but mostly i love clothes and makeup and accessories because it is a form of expression for me. i like being beautiful and i like expressing my vision of aesthetics. yes i can be 'naturally' beautiful, but that's not something i have any control over; makeup and style is.

Well, I wear make up when I'm working or going out because society expects me to. I don't want to miss a promotion or be bullied by strangers because I didn't put make up on. Unfortunately it also means Doctors won't take me seriously because I put make up on and I'm faking a smile.

I can at least say I have never done it to gain a man's attention. I've no interest in men so it wouldn't occur to me to do it to please the Man. Just to please Everyone

so going through this topic I've noticed people keep mentioning wearing make-up for jobs and such. is make-up really a deciding factor for companies looking to hire? =/ I don't like make-up, never have. I've also been job hunting for over a year without success and have been wondering what it is I'm doing wrong. could it be because I don't wear make-up?

I've kinda thought about the whole "You wouldn't be doing it at all unless and man made women do it at some point." But I don't think it's entirely true. I mean I learned all I know about lady stuff from my mom. From watching her and asking about it. Not "Men like it when you do this." Maybe she was "conditioned." But it wouldn't continue with such force if women didn't comply to or enjoy it on some level.

There's got to be some level of accountability to women here. If we stopped doing it it would stop being a thing. Since we're all not a hivemind that's probably not going to happen.

I honestly like makeup. I'm lazy as fuck so when I'm at home I don't wear it, but I find it pretty and feel a bit more confident while wearing it. It doesn't have anything to do with attracting men; I just feel more comfortable with it on.

There's nothing wrong with not wearing makeup, and I would never judge anyone for that, but...people can and do wear it for reasons other than 'to make themselves more desirable for men'.
