I heard it on the radio recently too! It was neat!

But I just thought it was cool. I'm not Korean so it didn't have the impact on me it did for you...

I think that's more a novelty hit than a sign that K-pop's getting mainstream in the USA. But there was that Girl's K-pop group on Letterman a while ago, IIRC, so maybe I'm wrong.

Girls Generation?

Yeah, they have the best chance of really bringing the Halleyu over here since they get a lot of hits on YouTube and their US concerts usually sell out. They need harder promotion though.

But Gangam Style is a novelty song through. People like it because it's catchy and has a silly dance with an awesome video even though the song is a critique about S. Korea's vapid over-consumption.

It might be a novelty for the US but it's not novelty for PSY. All his music is like that.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-12 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, many Kpop songs are like that. Even the first time I heard the song I think it's a bit Jpop-ish too. *shrugs*

Agreed on the novelty thing.

I mean, dude on the street probably considers it "Korean Numa Numa" or something :I

I heard this on the radio the other day too! Which I wasn't really expecting at all. But it was pretty cool so I can see where you are coming from even if I'm not in k-pop fandom or anything.

Since we're here, does anybody have GIFs of elevator guy? Particularly one that starts with the doors opening and ending with the doors closing. I just need to know if it exists before I actually make one myself.

Best I have for you.

i'm surprised nobody's made a gif exactly like the one you mentioned and it'd be awesome if you made it.

the closest i got:

I can't find one of the whole open-to-close shot, but here's a shorter version:

Seems like a pretty valid thing to get excited about.

Dude I can totally understand why that would mean so much to you! I don't know how much you are going to hear as long as the songs are in Korean though. People like to sing along to pop music. I enjoy k-pop, but I can't sing along and I've never heard an english version that sounded as good as the korean.

hardcore kpop fan here, and I'm personally praying that they don't start releasing songs in English. for me the Korean is half the fun and I'd rather sing along in my fail Korean then listen to awkward Engrish remakes of songs I already enjoyed despite the language barrier.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-12 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
i hope they don't start releasing english versions as well, especially if they're doing it to get popularity in english-speaking markets. just because they're in english doesn't mean english markets are going to like them. given the fact that most of the english in current k-pop is terribly mangled, mis-pronounced, and not even close to grammatically correct, i can't picture people wanting to listen to three or four minutes of that.

Even when artists are fluent sometimes their emotions just don't translate. I can thing of a few Spanish and French artists who just sound flat in English too. I'd guess there's a skill to singing in a language not your own. I bet Opera singers learn it, heh.

Youtube Nylon Pink. They've done some english covers of Kpop songs (2ne1, Girls Generation and Big Bang)

Googling that so hard anon, thanks. Though if I start being able to actually sing 2ne1 I will be annoying many people :D

I finally heard it on the radio the other day with my best friend, who also likes K-Pop and "Gangnam Style", and we were both freaking out so much! It might end up just being a novelty hit, but Psy has got a really great sense of humor, a catchy sound, fluency in English, and Justin Bieber's management behind him, so he could also end up really successful and pave the way for other Korean acts.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-12 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
I had to make a very long drive today and I heard this song on the radio THREE TIMES! Twice on the same station, even!

It's really nifty hearing a non-English song on American pop stations. The occasional song in Spanish will pop up, but that's usually it. "We No Speak Americano" is the only other recent example I can think of.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-12 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not even into kpop anymore and I can't explain the amounts of excitement I get when I see him on Ellen and on the radio ahh it's just so cool!

[personal profile] kayleen_san 2012-09-12 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
K-Pop fan for ten years now (thank you, BoA!) and I have to say, I'm right there with you. Go Psy!
