Okay this will sound strange, but who's the most liked or known composer where you come from?

People will always default to Mozart, Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky. If they've heard of any composers, it's those three.

(...And iTunes plays Russian Dances from Nutcracker. THANK YOU, ITUNES.)

I think Beethoven, but Tchaikovsky also comes to mind immediately.

Classical composers - Canada!

(Anonymous) 2012-09-12 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Not many people comes to mind. All the well-known composers are contemporary or modern composers. I can't think of anyone famous from before the 1900s unless you count the person who wrote the national anthem.

The most famous composer right now is probably Howard Shore of the Lord of the Rings fame. Other composers you might know are Brian Cherney, Malcolm Forsyth, Glenn Gould (most well known as a concert pianist, he composed original works for piano and arranged and transcribed orchestral pieces for piano), Alexina Louie, and Howard Cable (though well-loved for his concert bands compositions, he composed the original theme for Hockey Night in Canada and arranged the TV version of Dolores Claman's "The Hockey Theme". His arrangement of Claman's theme replaced his own earlier theme, and is the version that you hear on TV today).

Oops, were you asking for names of composers a random person from my country would know? They'd probably say some combination of Bach, Beethoven and Mozart. Maybe even Chopin if they like the piano.

I don't know how liked he is, but we learnt a lot about Edward Elgar when I was at school. Although that was probably more because he was a local boy.

Sibelius, most likely, Merikanto and Madetoja are also pretty well known. And Mozart, Bach, Vivaldi, and Strauss family, when considering foreign composers, but that depends completely on the person you are talking to.

I think the ones that the average person where I'm from would be most likely to know would probably be Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, maybe Handel or Bach.

If someone doesn't know who Bach is, they're missing out, big time.

Smetana, Mozart, Dvorak, Bach, Chopin.

Yeah, that's usually what schools teach.

Edvard Grieg is pretty well known around here.
