The mistake lies not in thinking the South is full of bigots and narrow-minded people, but in thinking the rest of the country is any better. (Sorry. Some people up the street just put up an anti-gay marriage lawn sign, supporting the proposed amendment to our [non-Southern] state constitution, and I hate everything right now.)

Actually, some states are measurably better. 6 states and 2 tribes and DC recognize gay marriage.

Whereas some states are measurably worse, even going so far as to say it's legally OK for kids to bully gays.

"...it's legally OK for kids to bully gays."

Where? I'm looking into moving and I don't want to ove there.

I also wanted to add that here in California (which is stereotyped as being filled with liberals) Prop 8 passed, banning gay marriage. Where I live, people were really vocal in their support of it... it broke my heart.

Yup. Most people think of the South as racist without realizing that a major contributing factor is that there are other races around. By far the most racially homogenous areas in the US are New England and the Midwest, so there are less chances for those areas to be assholes to each other. My Southern home city is way more diverse than many areas of the country.

Matthew Shephard was killed in Wyoming; Larry King in California. A string of 19 murders of homosexuals occured between 1984 and 1986 in Minnesota.

Also, Mitt Romney is the governor of Massachusetts. Motherfucking Massachusetts elected a dude who is now against abortion except in cases of incest, rape, and to save the life of the mother and is anti-gay marriage. Clearly, the Southern states don't have a monopoly on conservatism.

Agreed with both this and the parent comment. Because SHEESH. Also, things like racism and homophobia, gross as they are, are still not as simple as whether or not people say racist or homophobic things, or even enact racist or homophobic legislation.

I would really like to re-find the study I read that basically broke down race relations like this: Southerners, as a *general* trend (as in, not individuals but as an aggregate) are more likely to display overt racism (racial slurs and racist jokes, for example) but exhibit a much more distinct tolerance in their everyday lives, likely due to the large African-American population. Northerners are more like to exhibit aversive racism, or the subtle stuff that shows bias without the words or the violence.

I'm not arguing that aversive racism is better or worse than overt racism, just arguing that they are *both* racism, so saying Southerners are somehow racist and awful implies other people *aren't*, and that's denying a big, big problem on top of stereotyping a huge segment of the population.
