itawtc.

I was really disgusted with the way TPTB ended the character, but by that point I didn't expect much better from the ST:ENT production team. And I was hoping to see lots more of Trinneer after Enterprise (and SA), but sadly, if it happened, I've missed it. *schedules trip to IMDB*

@OP: It's been a while, but I want to say that the character showed a bit of that "we Southerners are supposed to be X, but I can definitely lean Y" that was probably intended to be a positive, but often didn't sit well with me. *shrugs* But when compared to the (non-Southern U.S.) Captain of the vessel, Trip was usually the much more rational character, so you really have to take the quality of his surrounding characters into consideration when you judge him.

But... "...intense loathing..." Really? What the hell have Southerners done to you personally, anyway?

He could learn things, but it was very.... plot-centric. None of those lessons carried over to other episodes and he didn't really change since the pilot (save for his forced relationship).

It was the same issue with Voyager-- only I actually found that the Voyager cast popped more and was actually likeable.

OP is weird.

Actually, I meant lean, not learn - so we're still in total agreement. :-p

I don't think I'm using a Southernism, though I did learn it in the South: to "lean Y" would be to bend a bit in your consideration of Y (Y = a position/attitude/lifestyle/whatever), but not necessarily to adopt it.
