Kakashi is my favorite from the series, too, even though I haven't read it in so long. The only reason I'm paying attention to the most recent chapters is because they involve Kakashi. As much as I want to move on from Naruto, that bit of investment is still there.

But I agree, there are amazing fanfics out there based on this series that are better than the original material itself in terms of plot and characterization (and not just the characterization of Kakashi but of all the supporting characters that get ignored in their canon.)

There are tons of fandoms I'm into that some of the fanfic has been better than the original product.... Naruto is indeed one of them!

It's been years since I stopped reading Naruto and I was never too much into the fandom, but I remember the fic I read was quite good.

I know what you mean :(

I love the characters so much yet I hate the current direction of the manga and I got tired of the drama.

Shounen shit?
I keep wondering why people who hate shounen read it in the first place...

It's not hard to love and hate a genre at the same time.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Because some shounen series have ridiculously large fandoms, and I want the fandom. I can enjoy the original, but thirty pages of fight scenes aren't why I read them; I want the characters and the world building, for good or bad.

Some tropes are staple, yes, but sometimes, just SOMETIMES, we'd like to see some variety. Naruto started off different from many of the other shounen I read at the time, but it slowly morphed into everything else and got boring and bad.

You sound just like me, OP. One of the current fic writers that I read had some old Naruto stuff, so I checked that out even though I hadn't done anything with the series in years. That perked my interests so I went back to read some old fics I used to like, expecting myself to see all the flaws and instead I was like, "HGKGDFGJS THESE WERE AWESOME."

And then I used the wiki to read up on what'd been happened with the actual canon plot and I was like... oh.

Though the new movie looks interesting, since it's literally an animated AU. I love me my AU's.

Fandom is like the Rumpelstiltskin: they can turn piles and piles of crap canon material and turn them into gold.

Also story time!: I remember starting to read Naruto (a friend introduced me to it). It was my first taste of shounen manga (outside of Dragon Ball/DBZ). I thought it was pretty interesting how they actually explored the fact that Naruto wasn't happy being an orphan, and how having some weird ass demon inside wasn't so cool. By the end of the Zabuza & Haku arc, I had hopes it was going to explore shounen manga tropes and do a deconstruction of them.

And then everything else happened, oh boy...

Yeah, all of Part I really seemed to be trying to do that. I honestly don't know why Part II started playing every trope straight. Maybe the author just got bored.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the same happened to me. I still love the first part, before the time skip, because it felt different from other shounen. But then, cliche after cliche after cliche...

MTE
I was madly in love with Naruto until the time skip. Everything just got over-complicated after that. Same thing happened to Bleach after the first arc, never touched both of them anymore after that.

I like the beginning of part 2. LOVED all the Gaara and Shikamaru stuff, but yeah, a lot of the over used tropes started showing up up mid way through out that opening.

I remember me and some friends thinking everything was going be soooo good at that point... and slowly leaving the series out of boredom and frustation. Years later I realized the problems started since the first part...

I still read the occasional Kakashi/Older!Sakura fic myself. And the odd Gaara/Sakura fic cause I have a few epic fanfic writers I look at for those pairs. ^^

Hate the actual canon now, but yes, some of the fic is amazing and I wish hal of that was actual story proper.

Naruto fanfiction really is incredibly, and consistently, good. I mean, there's truckloads of crap even worse than canon (and that's saying something), but the diamonds scattered throughout make it all worthwhile. I've got so many favorite authors in that fandom, especially the ones who take the much-neglected female characters and let them reach their full potential. And the forums are hilarious.

Every time I ask myself why I still read this manga, my answer is always "the fandom". Okay, okay, and a lot of Kishimoto's stuff is still worth it. Fandom didn't give me Darui, after all.

Oh, OP, I feel you.

I was heavily involved in the Naruto fandom back in (what I consider) its heyday in 2005--wrote a metric ton of fic, participated in multiple RPs, the works, make (terrible) icons, the works. But even then I didn't love Naruto so much for what it was as for what it COULD be. The world was amazing, the minor characters were amazing...the major characters kind of bored me, honestly, but why bother with Sasuke being an idiot when you could write and read fic about Team Yondaime or the Sannin as youngsters or the First Great Ninja War?

I haven't bothered with canon in years, since Shippuuden dumped dirt on the only characters I loved, but I still occasionally read fic and even more occasionally write it. Minor characters or OCs only, please!

Link please, ooh please!!! 0=)

I'm dying og curiosity!!

[personal profile] firstmoonie 2012-09-13 09:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, how I understand your feelings OP.
Naruto is like my drug, I hate it and want to quit it but something in it never lets me go.

Joining to the Naruto fandom was one of my best decisions in my life. Art work was amazing, fandom was crazy...You just can't let it go fully. After some time passes and you drop by again.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Naruto fanfic took so many of the characters that seemed two-dimensional and cliched in the original and made them into something nuanced and amazing. Bless you all, writers. I spent so much time laughing, thinking, and being enriched by your stories. That canon's real gift, in my estimation, was the fanworks it inspired.

fanfic authors and fanvid creators can make series seem so much more interesting than they are
I'm very grateful they exist
