Dude, I think you should just embrace what you enjoy. Gangsta rap isn't my thing at all, but there's no shame in enjoying some music and wanting to go see a concert, even if you don't fit the stereotype for the person that likes a certain thing.

I mean...I can totally identify with feeling awkward in that situation, but I don't think you "fail." Just try to relax and enjoy yourself, however it is that you find enjoyment.

Pretty much this. Stereotypes shouldn't prevent someone from enjoying something.

edit: ok I think I misread this secret upon looking at it again. But at any rate you don't need to feel ashamed of that..? I imagine that would be an awkward situation though if everyone was staring at you. there there. But I don't really see what you mean by that's even worse with regards to you being white. Like... it's even more shameful to like gangsta rap if you're white? I'm kind of confused. hence originally just typing wh.

I think OP meant he fit practically every group gangsta rap lyrics tend to bash. Besides women. But honestly I don't know whether it's more misogynistic or homophobic, it's a whole lot of both...
hornpile: (Default)

[personal profile] hornpile 2012-09-12 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
right. that would make more sense...

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'd lean more on the side of homophobic, simply because there are a few [albeit far between] examples where the lyrics aren't completely misogynistic, and I don't think you can say that about it as far as homophobia goes.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-12 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way too, OP. I had to pretend to stop liking Tyler, The Creator and Odd Future for a while because of the rape wank between them and (largely white) media SJWs. But sometimes I feel like playing some of their stuff because it makes me feel good, you know?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-12 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering the kind of lyrics and themes gangsta rap embraces, fearing they are going to fuck you up at a concert, given your self-description, is not unreasonable. I believe you did the wise thing. Listen to it if you must, but stay safe.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-12 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

Maybe try to find a bigger event that draws a more diverse crowd to not feel so out of place. And try convincing some friends to tag along.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
This so much. Your safety is #1 priority, OP. If you feel threatened in any way no one should think less of you for walking away.

[personal profile] republicanism 2012-09-13 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
huh? you have no idea what kind of "lyrics and themes" this particular group is "embracing," and even if the music is violent that doesnt mean the people at the concert are going to needlessly beat the shit out of you

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2012-09-12 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooookay. Stereotypes, stereotypes everywhere and not a clue in sight.

If you keep reinforcing and internalizing stereotypes, then you'll forget to enjoy your life.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-12 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you have any idea how much gangsta culture hates gay people. Physical endangerment is not out of the question in a situation like that.
ecoerrante: (Default)

[personal profile] ecoerrante 2012-09-13 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
The problem is that, while it's true that it's bad to reinforce stereotypes, fearing physical danger really wasn't that 'out there' for a situation like that. Rap culture really hates gay culture - that by itself is enough to make physical harm a real possibility in a situation like that...And the fact that the other ways the OP described them-self as aren't exactly things rap culture is fond of, doesn't really help.

So, on one hand? Yeah, you're right. But on the other, keeping yourself* safe trumps breaking stereotypes - at least in my book.

*and if the OP felt threatened, then they did the right thing by leaving

Mostly my issue was with OP's apparent shame because he enjoyed rap as a white, femme-y gay. I agree that he shouldn't put himself in danger to enjoy a concert, but that doesn't mean he has to point out that enjoying a type of music is wrong for someone like him. It just reinforces his own feeling that he enjoys something not for him.

i don't see what's wrong about liking gangsta rap as long as you recognize that A) a lot of it is pretty misogynist and B) it's not really FOR you or ABOUT you

but god dammit xzibit's '40 dayz & 40 nightz' is just so GOOD

Nothing wrong with liking gangsta rap! I do, too, and most of it certainly is not a love song to nerds or women (not even black women). But yeah, be careful at concerts. Crowds can be nasty towards those who stand out too much, especially with music amping up emotion. You have my envy for braving a concert at all, though. I couldn't have done it and I'd fit in.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
You can be a femme lesbian and still have fantasies about getting violently gangbanged, it's okay.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I dropped this: violently gangbanged by a bunch of dudebros. It's okay.

I can't hate, I used to enjoy some gangster rap, and overall enjoy some rappers. Wow, at least you tried to go to an underground concert, I would never do something like that even though I would likely fit in much more than you. It sucks that you weren't able to have a good time.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
There's no prequisite background for enjoying gangster rap. You're entitled to like what you like without reservations. But I'll second what other people said, you should definitely go with friends and stay safe.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 11:08 am (UTC)(link)
You're braver than I am OP. As a non-white male who grew up in the "hood" so to speak...I'd NEVER go to a rap concert. I suppose it depends on where you live but here, it would not be surprising at all if someone got hurt. Too many losers here who actually glorify the violence, materialism, and misogyny in the lyrics. Take care of yourself OP.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought this was going to be in rhyme and am sad that it wasn't.
